We examine the prospects of discrete quantum walks (QWs) with trapped ions. In particular, we analyze in detail the limitations of the protocol of Travaglione and Milburn (2002 Phys. Rev. A 65 032310) that has been implemented by several experimental groups in recent years. Based on the first realization in our group (Schmitz et al 2009 Phys. Rev. Lett. 103 090504), we investigate the consequences of leaving the scope of the approximations originally made, such as the Lamb–Dicke approximation…

Experimental quantum simulations of many-body physics with trapped ions

An overview of different trapping techniques of ions as well as implementations for coherent manipulation of their quantum states and current approaches for scaling up to more ions and more-dimensional systems are given.

Arrays of individually controlled ions suitable for two-dimensional quantum simulations

This work demonstrates individual control of the electronic and motional degrees of freedom, preparation of a fiducial initial state with ion motion close to the ground state, as well as a tuning of couplings between ions within experimental sequences, paves the way towards a quantum simulator of two-dimensional systems designed at will.

Freely configurable quantum simulator based on a two-dimensional array of individually trapped ions

A custom-built and precisely controlled quantum system may offer access to a fundamental understanding of another, less accessible system of interest. A universal quantum computer is currently out of

Multi-particle quantum walks on 3D integrated photonic chip

This work presents a quantum walk with three photons on a two-dimensional triangular lattice, which is mapped to a 19 × 19 × 19 high-dimensional state space and constructs a complex graph with 6859 nodes and 45,486 edges and successfully validate the nonclassical properties of the experiment.

Unveiling and exemplifying the unitary equivalence of discrete time quantum walk models

The two major discrete time formulations for quantum walks, coined and scattering, are unitarily equivalent for arbitrary position-dependent transition amplitudes and any topology (Andrade et al 2009

Focus on quantum simulation

The endeavour to control increasingly larger systems of particles at the quantum level is a natural goal, and will be a driving force for the physical sciences in the coming decades. The control of a

Dynamics in an exact solvable many body system: benchmark for quantum computer Out-of-Time-Order

Quantum magnets are never short of novel and fascinating dynamics, yet its simulation by classical computers requires exponentially-scaled computation resources, which renders the research on

Asymptotic behavior of quantum walks with spatio-temporal coin fluctuations

This paper analyze the long-time behavior of a particular class of decoherent quantum walks, which was only studied at the level of numerical simulations before, and yields an explicit expression for the covariance matrix of the asymptotic Gaussian in terms of the randomness parameters.

Asymptotic behavior of quantum walks with spatio-temporal coin fluctuations

Quantum walks subject to decoherence generically suffer the loss of their genuine quantum feature, a quadratically faster spreading compared to classical random walks. This intuitive statement has

Steered discrete-time quantum walks for engineering of quantum states

We analyze the strengths and limitations of steered discrete time quantum walks in generating quantum states of bipartite quantum systems comprising of a qubit coupled to a qudit system. We

The “arch” of simulating quantum spin systems with trapped ions

The complete mode of operation of a quantum simulator is explained on the basis of the simple model case—the proof of principle experiment of simulating the transition of aquantum magnet from paramagnetic into entangled ferromagnetic order.

Realization of a quantum walk with one and two trapped ions.

This work experimentally demonstrates a quantum walk on a line in phase space using one and two trapped ions, and extends the quantum walk by using two ions, giving the walker the additional possibility to stay instead of taking a step.

Quantum walk of a trapped ion in phase space.

This work implements the proof of principle for the quantum walk of one ion in a linear ion trap, and proposes an altered protocol based on methods of impulsive steps to scale the quantumWalk to many, in principal to several hundreds of steps.

Implementing the one-dimensional quantum (Hadamard) walk using a Bose-Einstein condensate

We propose a scheme to implement the simplest and best-studied version of the quantum random walk, the discrete Hadamard walk, in one dimension using a coherent macroscopic sample of ultracold atoms,

Realization of quantum walks with negligible decoherence in waveguide lattices.

It is shown that the propagation of photons in waveguide lattices, which have been studied extensively in recent years, are essentially an implementation of quantum walks.

Implementing the quantum random walk

This work proposes a scheme to implement the quantum random walk on a line and on a circle in an ion trap quantum computer, and shows how the enhanced features of these walks could be observed experimentally.

Experimental implementation of a discrete-time quantum random walk on an NMR quantum-information processor

We present an experimental implementation of the coined discrete-time quantum walk on a square using a three-qubit liquid-state nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) quantum-information processor (QIP).

Experimental Issues in Coherent Quantum-State Manipulation of Trapped Atomic Ions

Some experimental issues in the proposal for trappedion quantum computation by J. I. Cirac and P. Zoller (University of Innsbruck) are discussed and several possible decoherence mechanisms are examined.

Quantum walk on a line with two entangled particles

We introduce the concept of a quantum walk with two particles and study it for the case of a discrete time walk on a line. A quantum walk with more than one particle may contain entanglement, thus

Quantum Walk in Position Space with Single Optically Trapped Atoms

In this experiment, a quantum walk on the line with single neutral atoms is implemented by deterministically delocalizing them over the sites of a one-dimensional spin-dependent optical lattice and its spatial coherence is demonstrated.
