Abstract Whey is the complex waste of the dairy industry. Despite the fact, that it has numerous applications (like different form of food supplements), its major amount is still handled as waste. The carbohydrate, protein and lactic acid content, as well as the COD and BOD, are sufficiently high warranting disposal as waste resulting in high costs; however, their levels are insufficient for the cost-effective isolation and purification. Most of the numerous reports on whey utilisation focus on…

Extractive Fermentation for Enhanced Propionic Acid Production from Lactose by Propionibacterium acidipropionici
- 1998
Chemistry, Engineering
An extractive fermentation process using an amine extractant and a hollow‐fiber membrane extractor to selectively remove propionic acid from the fermentation broth was developed to produce propionate from lactose and gave consistent long‐term performance over the 1.5‐month period studied.

Biology, Chemistry
A highly efficient and stable high cell density (HCD) fermentation process with cell recycle by centrifugation was developed for propionic acid production from glucose using an acid‐tolerant strain of Propionibacterium acidipropionici, which had a higher specific growth rate, productivity, and acid tolerance compared to the wild type ATCC 4875.

Pathway engineering of Propionibacterium jensenii for improved production of propionic acid
- 2016
Engineering, Chemistry
PA production in P. jensenii with ppc overexpression as well as ldh deletion was investigated, which resulted in further increases in PA titer to 34.93 ± 2.99 g·L−1 in a fed-batch culture.

- 2005
Environmental Science, Biology
The enhanced propionic acid production from glucose by P. acidipropionici was thus attributed to both a high viable cell density maintained in the reactor and favorable mutations resulted from adaptation by cell immobilization in the FBB.
