The width of the Hadley cell is studied over a wide range of climate regimes using both simple and comprehensive atmospheric general circulation models. Aquaplanet, fixed sea surface temperature lower boundary conditions are used in both models to study the response of the Hadley cell width to changes in both global mean temperature and pole‐to‐equator temperature gradient. The primary sensitivity of both models is a large expansion of the Hadley cell with increased mean temperature. The models…

Midlatitude Static Stability in Simple and Comprehensive General Circulation Models

Abstract The static stability of the extratropical troposphere is examined in two atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) over idealized boundary conditions, with emphasis on the role of

Expansion of the Hadley cell under global warming

A consistent weakening and poleward expansion of the Hadley circulation is diagnosed in the climate change simulations of the IPCC AR4 project. Associated with this widening is a poleward expansion

Extent of Hadley circulations in dry atmospheres

The subtropical terminus of the Hadley circulation is interpreted as the latitude poleward of which vertical wave activity fluxes (meridional eddy entropy fluxes) become sufficiently deep to reach

Baroclinic Eddies and the Extent of the Hadley Circulation: An Idealized GCM Study

The Hadley circulation has widened over the past 30 years. This widening has been qualitatively reproduced in general circulation model (GCM) simulations of a warming climate. Comprehensive GCM

Expansion of the Hadley cell under global warming

AbstractA scaling relationship is introduced to explain the seasonality in the outer boundary of the Hadley cell in both climatology and trend in the simulations of phase 3 of the Coupled Model

Exploring the sensitivity of the large-scale atmosphere circulation to changes in surface temperature gradients using a Statistical-Dynamical Atmosphere Model

Abstract. Climate and weather conditions in the mid-latitudes are strongly driven by the large-scale atmosphere circulation. Observational data indicates that important components of the large-scale

Narrowing of the upwelling branch of the Brewer‐Dobson circulation and Hadley cell in chemistry‐climate model simulations of the 21st century

Changes in the width of the upwelling branch of the Brewer‐Dobson circulation and Hadley cell in the 21st Century are investigated using simulations from a coupled chemistry‐climate model. In these

Observational evidence for poleward expansion of the Hadley circulation

How the Hadley circulation changes in response to global climate change and how its change impacts upon regional and global climates has generated a lot of interest in the literature in the past few

Factors controlling Hadley circulation changes from the Last Glacial Maximum to the end of the 21st century

The Hadley circulation (HC) extent and strength are analyzed in a wide range of simulated climates from the Last Glacial Maximum to global warming scenarios. Motivated by HC theories, we analyze how

ITCZ Width Controls on Hadley Cell Extent and Eddy-Driven Jet Position and Their Response to Warming

The impact of global warming–induced intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) narrowing onto the higher-latitude circulation is examined in the GFDL Atmospheric Model, version 2.1 (AM2.1), run over

Midlatitude Static Stability in Simple and Comprehensive General Circulation Models

Abstract The static stability of the extratropical troposphere is examined in two atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) over idealized boundary conditions, with emphasis on the role of

The dynamic range of poleward energy transport in an atmospheric general circulation model

Understanding the reasons for which current climate models fail to reproduce the low equator‐to‐pole temperature gradient of past warm periods is among the major challenges in climate science. We

Expansion of the Hadley cell under global warming

A consistent weakening and poleward expansion of the Hadley circulation is diagnosed in the climate change simulations of the IPCC AR4 project. Associated with this widening is a poleward expansion

Eddy Influences on Hadley Circulations: Simulations with an Idealized GCM

An idealized GCM is used to investigate how the strength and meridional extent of the Hadley circulation depend on the planet radius, rotation rate, and thermal driving. Over wide parameter ranges,

A Gray-Radiation Aquaplanet Moist GCM. Part I: Static Stability and Eddy Scale

Abstract In this paper, a simplified moist general circulation model is developed and used to study changes in the atmospheric general circulation as the water vapor content of the atmosphere is

Tropopause height and zonal wind response to global warming in the IPCC scenario integrations

[1] The change in the extratropical circulation under global warming is studied using the climate models participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) fourth assessment

The Static Stability of the Midlatitude Troposphere: The Relevance of Moisture.

It is generally accepted that the action of baroclinic waves in midlatitude is responsible for raising the static stability of the troposphere above moist neutrality. Previous efforts to quantify

Robust increases in midlatitude static stability in simulations of global warming

We examine changes in the static stability of the midlatitude troposphere in simulations of global warming using 21 coupled climate models in the AR4 archive. The dry static stability within the

A Gray-Radiation Aquaplanet Moist GCM. Part II: Energy Transports in Altered Climates

Abstract A simplified moist general circulation model is used to study changes in the meridional transport of moist static energy by the atmosphere as the water vapor content is increased. The key

In this paper, the effect of a simple convection scheme on the zonally averaged tropical general circulation is examined within an idealized moist GCM to obtain broad classifications of the influence
