Catalyst-Enhanced Molten Salt Oxidation (CEMSO) is our improvement of the earlier process, Molten Salt Oxidation (MSO), originally employed for the destruction of hazardous materials by high temperature oxidation in a carbonate melt. MSO was abandoned because it was slow and only partially oxidized cotton, paper, and plastics. It was very efficient for many other chemicals and had oxidized the nerve gas sarin with >99.9999% efficiency. We came to realize that the concentration of the oxidizing…

Catalytic effect of cesium on the oxidation behavior of cation exchange resins in Li2CO3-Na2CO3-K2CO3 melt

After the treatment of liquid radioactive waste, there is a certain amount of Cs in the waste resin, and these Cs-doped resins are prone to volatilize during the thermal treatment process and cause

Molten salt oxidation of organic hazardous waste with high salt content

Results show that molten salt oxidation is a promising alternative for the disposal of organic hazardous wastes containing a high salt content and can be oxidised effectively in a molten salt bath.

Studies of Recycling of Poly(vinyl chloride) in Molten Na, Ca ‖ NO3, OH Systems

The results of this study show that the melts of alkali and alkaline-earth metal nitrates can be used for utilization of wastes of halogen-containing polymeric materials.

Study on 1,2,3‐trichlorobenzene destruction in a binary (Na,K)2CO3 molten salt oxidation system

This work focused on the destruction of 1,2,3‐trichlorobenzene (1,2,3‐TCB) in a binary molten salt oxidation (MSO) system. The effects of MSO reactor temperatures, additive amounts of TCB, and salt

Deep hexachlorocyclohexane oxidation on molten high-basic catalysts

Gas-liquid chromatography, chromato-mass-spectrometry, and capillary electrophoresis method were used to study the reaction of deep oxidation of γ-C6H6Cl6 (lindane, an insecticide of contact,

Oxidation in Molten Salts and Catalysts

The application of the technology of oxidation in molten salts and catalysts for the destruction of components of chemical weapons is examined in this paper. This technology provides efficient waste

Electrochemical studies of graphite oxidation in sodium carbonate melt

The oxidation of spectroscopic grade graphite in sparged beds of sodium carbonate employing air, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide was investigated at 900 /sup 0/C by using electrochemical techniques.

Electrochemical studies of molten sodium carbonate

Electrochemical studies of sparged beds of sodium carbonate at 900/sup 0/C employing mixtures of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor were conducted to determine the identities and relative

Graphite oxidation in sodium carbonate/sodium sulfate melts

The oxidation of spectroscopic grade graphite in sodium carbonate/sodium sulfate melts using oxidizing (air and oxygen) or inert (argon and nitrogen) sparge was investigated between 900 and 1000/sup

Molten Salt Oxidation of Mixed Wastes: Separation of Radioactive Materials and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Materials

Abstract The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is participating in a program to apply a molten salt oxidation (MSO) process to treatment of mixed (radioactive and RCRA) wastes. The salt residues
