The aim of the paper is to get insight into flow patterns visualized by suspended anisotropic reflective particles. The motion of triaxial ellipsoids embedded in a three-dimensional flow, i.e., which cannot be reduced to a local plane Couette flow, is calculated. Both the asymptotic trajectory and the transient time to reach it are discussed. These results are used to simulate laser sheet visualizations of two classical three-dimensional flows (Taylor–Couette vortices and flow between rotating…

Virtual Rheoscopic Fluids

This work adopts the physical principles of real rheoscopic particles and applies them, in model form, to 3D velocity fields, to render 3D simulations in a way that gives insight into the dynamics of the system.

Probabilistic description of flake orientation suspended in rotating wave flows

In fluid dynamics experiments, flake-based flow visualization is a common technique to capture flow structures through the rays reflected from flat tracers suspended in the fluid. However, the

Virtual Rheoscopic Fluids for Flow Visualization

The rendering of a virtual rheoscopic fluid is described, produced by defining a closed-form formula for the orientation of shear layers in the flow and using this orientation to volume render the flow as a material with anisotropic reflectance and transparency.

Turbulence visualization using reflective flakes

The physical mechanism of flow visualizations using reflective flakes is investigated. First, we derive theoretically the governing equations of flake motion based on the assumption that flakes are

Particle-laden Taylor–Couette flows: higher-order transitions and evidence for azimuthally localized wavy vortices

Abstract We extend upon the known flow transitions in neutrally buoyant particle-laden Taylor–Couette flows by accessing higher suspension Reynolds numbers $(Re_{{susp}} \sim O(10^3))$ in a geometry

Highly turbulent Couette–Taylor bubbly flow patterns

We present the results of experimental study of a Couette–Taylor system with superimposed axial flow and an upper free surface, in the high Taylor number regime. At large Taylor numbers, when the

Emergent order in rheoscopic swirls

We consider the ordering of particles in a rheoscopic fluid (a suspension of microscopic rod-like particles) in a steady two-dimensional flow, and discuss its consequences for the reflection of

A statistical study of spots in torsional Couette flow

This article presents some results on the statistical behavior of localized structures—called “spots”—that propagate in the flow between a rotating and a stationary disk when those are very close one

Motion of a small flat plate in a viscous flow

A small flat plate of arbitrary shape moving in a viscous flow is investigated analytically under the Stokes approximation. It is shown that the unit normal n(t) of the plate at position x rotates,

Experiments on the transition to turbulence of the flow between a stationary and a rotating disk

The goal of this experimental study is to describe the transition to turbulence of the flow between a rotating and a stationary disk. Our experimental apparatus consists of a rotating disk set in a

On the dynamics of suspended microstructure in unsteady, spatially inhomogeneous, two-dimensional fluid flows

The dynamical behaviour of stretchable, orientable microstructure suspended in a general two-dimensional fluid flow is investigated. The state of the microstructure in question is described by an

Microhydrodynamics: Principles and Selected Applications

This text focuses on determining the motion of particles through a viscous fluid in bounded and unbounded flow. Its central theme is the mobility relation between particle motion and forces, and

Rigid particles suspended in time-dependent flows: irregular versus regular motion, disorder versus order

An experimental and analytical investigation is conducted into the dynamics of small, non-spherical, rigid particles suspended in a flow that is time-dependent from the point of view of the particle,

Effects of ‘‘Kalliroscope’’ flow visualization particles on rotating Couette–Taylor flow

Experimental results are presented which show that Taylor vortex flow in a vertically mounted rotating Couette system, visualized with a ‘‘Kalliroscope’’ suspension evolves to a spatially nonperiodic

Extensional flow of semidilute suspensions of rod‐like particles through an orifice

This paper deals with the extensional flow of semidilute suspensions of non‐Brownian rod‐like particles through an orifice. The experimental setup allows simultaneously visualizations of the flow

On flow visualization using reflective flakes

An analysis of flow visualization using small reflective flakes is introduced. This rational analysis is based on a stochastic treatment of Jeffery's (1922) solution for the motion of ellipsoidal

The motion of ellipsoidal particles immersed in a viscous fluid

In both physical and biological science, we are often concerned with the properties of a fluid, or plasma, in which small particles or corpuscles are suspended and carried about by the motion of the

Microstructure suspended in three-dimensional flows

The dynamical behaviour of stretchable, orientable microstructure suspended in a general three-dimensional fluid flow is investigated. Model equations given by Olbricht, Rallison & Leal (1982) are

The motion of rigid particles in a shear flow at low Reynolds number

According to Jeffery (1923) the axis of an isolated rigid neutrally buoyant ellipsoid of revolution in a uniform simple shear at low Reynolds number moves in one of a family of closed periodic
