Soil enzymes can be sensitive indicators of C changes in forest soils produced by global warming. This study assessed the response to temperature of soil enzymes in forest soils from the fragile cold ecosystems of Western Patagonia (Chile), to be used as indicators of the biological C emissions from the soil under climate change for this Region. Soil from two sites of Nothofagus forest were sampled (0-5 cm), and soil C mineralization (21 days of soil incubation) and the enzyme activities of N…

Significance of the Enzymes Associated with Soil C and N Transformation

This chapter presents a brief overview of earlier and recent findings dealing with the most important soil enzymes involved in the soil C and N cycle, such as cellulase, β-glucosidase, urease, invertase, laccase, peroxidases, proteases, and nitrate reductase.

Role of Soil Microbiota Enzymes in Soil Health and Activity Changes Depending on Climate Change and the Type of Soil Ecosystem

This review aims to highlight the main groups of microbial enzymes found in soil, their role in the global nutrient cycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, carbon sequestration, and the influence of intensive agriculture on microbial enzymatic activity, and the variations in enzyme activity across different climate zones and soil ecosystems.

Response of Soil Dehydrogenase Activity to Salinity and Cadmium Species

Greater understanding of the microbial activity role in metal mobilization processes in soil is of major importance. The objective was to study the effect of major Cd species in solution of a saline

Field cultivation of Agaricus subrufescens Peck lowers soil glyphosate levels, alters soil microbial communities, and boosts soil enzyme activities in coffee plantations

Glyphosate is one of the most widely used non-selective organophosphate herbicides in agriculture. However, its extensive application has resulted in glyphosate accumulation in soil systems and

Different temperature sensitivity and kinetics of soil enzymes indicate seasonal shifts in C, N and P nutrient stoichiometry in acid forest soil

Acid forest soils in the Bohemian Forest in Central Europe are biogeochemically imbalanced in organic C, N and P processing. We hypothesized that these imbalances can be due to different temperature

Enzymes in the rhizosphere of plants growing in the vicinity of the Polish Arctowski Antarctic Station

Temperature changes in rhizospheric soils could lead to changes in substrate degradation rates and consequently in the availability of nutrients (C, N and P) for C. quitensis and D. antarctica in maritime Antarctica.

Activation Energy of Extracellular Enzymes in Soils from Different Biomes

The Ea in the arctic and subarctic zones for peroxidase was lower than the hydrolases and phenol oxidase values, indicating per oxidase may be a rate limited enzyme in environments under warming conditions.

Unexpected Effects of Chitin, Cellulose, and Lignin Addition on Soil Dynamics in a Wet Tropical Forest

Decades of studies on the role of decomposition in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling have focused on organic matter (OM) of plant origin. Despite potentially large inputs of belowground OM from

Significance of Enzyme Activities in Soil Nitrogen Mineralization

This study was undertaken to assess the relationship between nitrogen (N) mineralization in soils treated with eight lime application rates, with four field replications, and the activities of six

The biological activities of β-glucosidase, phosphatase and urease as soil quality indicators: a review

The roles of soil enzymes such as β-glucosidase, phosphatase and urease are reviewed, as well as the implications of their activities for soil quality.

Soil enzymes and biological activity at different levels of organic matter stability

A greater stabilization capacity of MF in allophanic soils than in kaolinitic soils due to the amorphous minerals clay materials was confirmed, and an inverse and significant relationship between Al pyrophosphate (Al bound to SOM) and the C-CO2 in volcanic soil, whereas the same correlation did not occur in kaalinitic soil.
