For the first time we present observational evidence for an anomalous isotopic structure of Ca  in mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars. The centroid wavelengths of Ca  infrared triplet lines in a number of stars have been found redshifted with respect to the centroids of the terrestrial Ca  lines. The record holder is the star HD 175640 for which the measured wavelength is consistent with Ca  being present in the atmosphere entirely in form of the heaviest stable iso- tope 48 Ca. This is a…

Heavy calcium in CP stars

Large wavelength shifts of infrared triplet lines of Ca II have been observed in the spectra of HgMn and magnetic Ap stars. They have been attributed to the heavy calcium isotopes, including 48 Ca.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of HgMn stars: A Time of Surprises

The origin of the abundance anomalies observed in late B-type stars with HgMn peculiarity is still poorly understood. Observationally, these stars are characterized by low rotational velocities and

Heavy Calcium in CP Stars: A New Isotopic Anomaly

We confirm that wavelengths shifts in the Ca II infrared triplet of CP stars are due to the rare, heavy isotope 48Ca. We have measurements of the previously difficult component λ8542, as well as

The calcium isotopic anomaly in magnetic CP stars

Received ; accepted Abstract. Chemically peculiar stars in the magnetic sequence can show the same isotopic anomaly in calcium previously discovered for mercury-manganese stars in the non-magnetic

Isotopic anomaly and stratification of Ca in magnetic Ap stars

Aims. We have carried out an accurate investigation of the Ca isotopic composition and stratification in the atmospheres of 23 magnetic chemically peculiar (Ap) stars of di! erent temperature and

Spectroscopic variability and magnetic fields of HgMn stars

The discovery of exotic abundances, chemical inhomogeneities, and weak magnetic fields on the surface of late B-type primaries in spectroscopic binaries has important implications not only for our

Magnetic fields of HgMn stars

Context. The frequent presence of weak magnetic fields on the surface of spotted late-B stars with HgMn peculiarity in binary systems has been controversial during the two last decades. Recent

Wavelengths and oscillator strengths of Xe II from the UVES spectra of four HgMn stars

Aims. In spite of large overabundances of Xe ii observed in numerous mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars, Xe ii oscillator strengths are only available for a very limited number of transitions. As a

Lower Main Sequence Stars of Pop I

In main-sequence stars with an effective temperature above 10,000 K, surface convection zones are very thin or even vanish if the superficial helium abundance decreases due to gravitational settling.

THE EFFECT OF ISOTOPIC SPLITTING ON THE BISECTOR AND INVERSIONS OF THE SOLAR Ca ii 854.2 nm LINE

The Ca ii 854.2 nm spectral line is a common diagnostic of the solar chromosphere. The average line profile shows an asymmetric core, and its bisector shows a characteristic inverse-C shape. The line

Isotopic abundances of Hg in mercury stars inferred from the Hg II line at 3984 A

Wavelengths of Hg ii lambda3984 in 30 Hg stars are distributed uniformly from the value for the terrestrial mix to a value that corresponds to nearly pure /sup 204/Hg. The wavelengths are correlated

On the elemental abundance and isotopic mixture of mercury in HgMn stars

Optical region spectra of 31 HgMn stars have been studied for the abundance and isotope mixture of mercury. In the course of the investigation the lines Hg  λ4358 and Hg  λλ3984,6149 have been

Mercury in the HgMn Stars χ Lupi and HR 7775

Observations of mercury lines in the HgMn stars χ Lupi and HR 7775 made with the Hubble Space Telescope Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph are presented and analyzed. In χ Lupi we find that all

New results of magnetic field diagnosis in HgMn stars and normal late B-type stars

We suggested in a previous paper that three HgMn stars, HD 175640, HD 178065, and HD 186122, may be suspected to possess a magnetic eld that could be larger than 2 kG. We report here new observations

Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in the transitions in calcium II

Abstract:The isotope shift and hyperfine structure in the three - transitions in Ca II have been studied by fast ion beam collinear laser spectroscopy for all stable Ca isotopes. The metastable 3d

Isotope shifts and nuclear-charge radii in singly ionized 40-48Ca.

The present results are used to extract a set of {delta}{l angle}{ital r}{sup 2}{r angle} values for all the isotopes, independent of the muonic data and earlier optical isotope-shift measurements.

Spectral Line Broadening by Plasmas

The usefulness of line-profile measurements as a diagnostic tool in plasma physics depends on our ability to analyze and interpret the data. In his earlier book, "Plasma Spectroscopy", * Hans Griem
