International meta-analysis of PTSD genome-wide association studies identifies sex- and ancestry-specific genetic risk loci
- C. NievergeltA. Maihofer K. Koenen
- 8 October 2019
Psychology, Medicine
A GWAS from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium is reported in which two risk loci in European ancestry and one locus in African ancestry individuals are identified and it is found that PTSD is genetically correlated with several other psychiatric traits.
Largest GWAS of PTSD (N=20 070) yields genetic overlap with schizophrenia and sex differences in heritability
- L. DuncanA. Ratanatharathorn K. Koenen
- 25 April 2017
Psychology, Medicine
The results demonstrate genetic influences on the development of PTSD, identify shared genetic risk between PTSD and other psychiatric disorders and highlight the importance of multiethnic/racial samples.
Risk Factors for Antenatal Depression and Associations with Infant Birth Outcomes: Results From a South African Birth Cohort Study.
- K. BrittainL. Myer Dan J Stein
- 1 November 2015
Medicine, Psychology
Antenatal depression and associated risk factors are highly prevalent in this setting and are associated with adverse fetal growth and maternal mental health may be an important predictor of infant growth in utero.
Risk and protective factors for child development: An observational South African birth cohort
- K. DonaldC. Wedderburn Dan J Stein
- 1 September 2019
Medicine
This study provides reliable developmental data from a sub-Saharan African setting in a well-characterised sample of mother–child dyads and highlights not only the important protective effects of maternal education, birth weight, and socioeconomic status for developmental outcomes but also sex differences in developmental outcomes and key risk and protective factors for each group.
Genetic architecture of subcortical brain structures in 38,851 individuals
- C. SatizabalH. Adams M. Ikram
- 21 October 2019
Biology, Medicine
Genome-wide analysis identifies variants associated with the volume of seven different subcortical brain regions defined by magnetic resonance imaging, uncover novel biology and potential drug targets underlying brain development and disease.
Multi-ancestry genome-wide association study of major depression aids locus discovery, fine mapping, gene prioritization and causal inference
- Xiangrui MengGeorgina Navoly Biobank Japan Project
- 4 January 2024
Medicine, Psychology
It is suggested that, for MD, increasing ancestral and global diversity in genetic studies may be particularly important to ensure discovery of core genes and inform about transferability of findings.
Maternal health and birth outcomes in a South African birth cohort study
- H. ZarJennifer A. Pellowski Dan J Stein
- 21 November 2019
Medicine
Several modifiable risk factors including food insecurity, smoking, and alcohol consumption during pregnancy were identified as associated with negative birth outcomes, all of which are amenable to public health interventions.
Investigating the psychosocial determinants of child health in Africa: The Drakenstein Child Health Study.
- Dan J SteinDan J Stein H. Zar
- 30 August 2015
Psychology, Medicine
The rationale for and baseline findings from the psychosocial component of the Drakenstein Child Health Study are described, and initial data on psychological distress, depression, substance use, and exposure to traumatic stressors and intimate partner violence are provided.
Perinatal depression among mothers in a South African birth cohort study: Trajectories from pregnancy to 18 months postpartum
- Jennifer A. PellowskiAngela M. Bengtson Dan J Stein
- 1 December 2019
Medicine, Psychology
Perinatal depressive symptom trajectories are understudied in sub-Saharan Africa and the group with persistent severe symptoms had the most risk factors.
Trans-ancestry genome-wide study of depression identifies 697 associations implicating cell types and pharmacotherapies
- Mark J. AdamsF. Streit A. M. McIntosh
- 1 January 2025
Medicine, Psychology
SUMMARY In a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of 688,808 individuals with major depression (MD) and 4,364,225 controls from 29 countries across diverse and admixed ancestries, we…
