ظلت الدراسات اللغوية تعتمد على النصوص المكتوبة لإعادة صياغة البنية النحوية للغة الأصلية، وفي بداية النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر اهتم الباحثون باللهجات الحية في إطار الدراسات المقارنة، وظهرت مدارس اهتمت باللغات الهندو-الأوروبية وباللهجات السامية، وقد رأت أن اللغة موجودة في الفرد، وأن ما يحدث من تغيرات صوتية أو دلالية فيها يعود إلى الفرد، وما زالت هذه الدراسات وثيقة الصلة بأعمال النحاة الجدد، كفيلهلم فون هامبولتو، ورايت، وسوسير وأندريه مارتينية، وإدوارد سابير وفرانز بواس وليوناردو بلومفيلد وغيرهم. بدأت الدراسات اللغوية المعاصرة تأخذ منحى جديدا في مجال التطبيق، وكان لبعض النظريات إرهاصات سابقة. ستقوم الدراسة بتتبع جهود فرديناند دي سوسير وتأثير محاضراته في الدراسات اللغوية في أوروبا وأميركا؛ إذ قدم ملاحظات مهمة حول طبيعة اللغة وكيفية دراستها، واقترح أن تصنف اللغة ضمن حقل يدرس فيه جميع أنظمة العلامات والإشارات وما يتعارف عليه الناس من رموز ودلالات، وعالج اللغة عبر ظواهر ثنائية منها: ثنائية اللغة والكلام، ودراسة اللغة بالبعدين التاريخي والوصفي، والعلامة اللغوية، والعلاقة بين العناصر اللغوية، وثنائية السيمولوجيا؛ أما القدامى العرب فتناولوا ما عالجه دي سوسير من قضايا لغوية نجد فيها تكاملا بين الجهد اللغوي العربي القديم، وجهوده في اللغة في الأمور الآتية: التفريق بين اللغة واللسان واللغة والكلام بين دي سوسير والجرجاني، والعلاقة بين الكلمات في التعبير، والعلامة اللغوية.
Linguistic studies remained reliant on written texts to recast the grammatical
structure of original language. At the beginning of the nineteenth century researchers
focused on modern dialects in the context of comparative studies and many schools
appeared to deal with languages of the Indo-European and Semetic dialects, where
it was found that the individual language of the human being and the changes that
/happen on his/her voice or the semantic changes are because of the person himself
herself. These studies are still relevant to the work of neo-grammarians as; Kvelhelm
,Fone Hambolto, Wright, Saussure, Andre Martanyh, Edward Sapir, Franz, Boas
Leonard Bloomfield and others. A contemporary linguistic study took a new direction

This study will track the efforts of Ferdinand de Saussure and the impact of his
lectures in linguistic studies in Europe and America; since he introduced important
observations about the nature of language and its study. De Saussure found that the
language study is within the field of system that all signs, signals, what the people
recognize as symbols and semantics. The language is categorized through the bilateral
phenomena including: bilingual speech, language study by its dimensions; historical
and descriptive, the linguistic sign, the relationship between linguistic elements, and
bilateral semiology. The ancient Arab dealt with issues of language that are done by
de Saussure. The study discovered the integration between the efforts of ancient Arabs
in the following matters: the distinction between language, tongue and speech; the
distinction between de Saussure and Jurjani and the relationship between words in
.speech, language and signs.
