Статтю присвячено питанню оволодіння студентами природничих спеціальностей фаховою термінологією в процесі вивчення англійської мови для спеціальних цілей. Визначено основні критерії вивчення лексичного матеріалу, розглянуто різні типи лексичних вправ, необхідних для поповнення та закріплення термінологічного галузевого вокабуляру майбутнього фахівця. (The article focuses on the problems of vocabulary skills developing in students of natural sciences at ESP classes since the acquisition of vocabulary is a fundamental and important component in gaining professional competence. The main stages of teaching subject specific vocabulary, namely, 1) new lexical items introduction, 2) vocabulary consolidation and practice, and 3) vocabulary mastering in the given specific learning situation are presented. The authors describe various types of lexical exercises for enriching students’ scientific vocabulary. The exercises were developed and combined into the course books «English for Physicists», «English for Geologists», and «English for Biologists». The course books have been used in the process of ESP teaching for several years and proved to be successful. The authors suggest the use of a variety of exercises within each stage of specific vocabulary teaching that would appeal to learner’s different aims. For this purpose, the best types of vocabulary exercises to present new terminology items are grouping exercises and those aimed at producing phrases based on newly acquired items with the focus on teaching correct item pronunciation. To consolidate and practice terminology vocabulary the authors suggest using the exercises of receptive, productive and communicative character (e.g., guessing the meaning of target terminology in the text, processing specific vocabulary with varied associations, finding the mistakes in a piece of text and correcting them, etc.). Creative tasks (e.g., pair work, group work, project presentation and its discussion, etc.) proved to be a successful tool to be used at the third stage of integrating ESP vocabulary into a learner’s language system.)
