(The article traces the evolution of the motif of escape writer’s drama. The focus is not on the internal migration but the spatial movement of characters in order to release. The analysis of escape syndrome as plot-making and character-making factor is made on the material of dramatic works «Three Minutes», «Autumn Tale,» «Cassandra», «Rufin and Priscilla», «Advocate Martian.» Some of the characters are specially underlined in the research such as mythological characters runaway (Helena), the characters who have reputation of winner (Hector), the professional seducer, with whom many victims dare to escape (Don Juan). There are the examples of escape, which is a response to the ideological, moral, psychological discomfort. However, mostly the escape is the result of the desire of spiritual freedom, radical lifestyle changes. It is emphasized that migration stands a through line event in many works of Lesya Ukrainka. However, often escape is not fully implemented and stays the intention that causes unresolved plot. Preferably the escape is useless in texts of the writer as it becomes a new prison, leading to self-destroing of the characters. Special attention is payed to motif of the rejection of escape in Lesya Ukrainka’s dramas. It is proved that the pursuit of freedom becomes ambivalent nature in the author’s interpretation and is opposed to the stoicism of certain characters. Overcoming of escape syndrome is accompanied by sacrifice, but in whole the category of internal freedom in the art world of Lesya Ukrainka is a constructive alternative for destructive temptations of escapism.)
