Стаття присвячена дослідженню композиційного ритму художньої прози доби модернізму на матеріалі оповідання В. Вулф. У роботі проаналізовано головні підходи до визначення ритму у філологічній парадигмі, а також основні закономірності його функціонування і впливу на динамічне розгортання твору. В результаті дослідження художнього матеріалу було визначено головні лінгвостилістичні засоби створення композиційного ритму й систему мотивів твору.
(The article deals with the compositional rhythm of the modernist fiction. The rhythm as a characteristic of narrative prose has been researched within the scope of philology, namely literary criticism, stylistics and cognitive narratology. The present study envisages the key features of the linguistic-and-stylistic inventory employed in attaining the unique rhythmic pattern
of the short narrative by V. Woolf. The compositional rhythmic pattern is represented as a linear flow of the compositional blocks being tightly bound with the system of text motifs, embodied throughout the textual structure. The rhythm, being defined in its broadest philological sense as a periodic recurrence of speech patterns, has been proven to be one of the most crucial constituent of a narrative text. The modernist narrative, being renowned for its experimental techniques of structuring the bulk of text, is characterized by the unconventional rhythmic patterns. To provide the profound insight into its general peculiarities
the main already-existing theoretical and methodological ideas were scrutinized. Besides, the unit of rhythm was established and the category of the compositional rhythm was singled out as the paramount level of rhythm. Moreover, the major stylistic devices, such as different types of repetitions, stylistically marked semantic oppositions and metaphors, were discussed and illustrated with the examples from the original modernist short story narrative ‘Kew Gardens’ by V. Woolf.)
