One of the most challenging tasks in designing a turbocharger is to guarantee a sufficient lifetime. Turbine housings are critical parts due to their very complex geometry and consequently complicated temperature and stress distributions. Therefore, high thermal loads as well as thermo-mechanical fatigue have to be considered. Calculating the thermal stress distribution in the turbine housing, steady state and transient, can indicate the regions of crack initiation. From this information…

Thermomechanical Analysis of Transient Temperatures in a Radial Turbine Wheel

In turbomachinery design the accurate prediction of the life cycle is one of the most challenging issues. Traditionally, life cycle calculations for radial turbine wheels of turbochargers focus on

Uncoupled CFD-FEA Methods for the Thermo-Structural Analysis of Turbochargers

In turbocharger design, the accurate determination of thermally induced stresses is of particular importance for life cycle predictions. An accurate, transient, thermal finite element analysis (FEA)

Speed-up Methods for the Modeling of Transient Temperatures with regard to Thermal and Thermomechanical Fatigue

The accurate prediction of the life cycle in turbomachinery design is one of the most challenging issues. Traditionally, life cycle calculations for radial turbine wheels of turbochargers focus on

Experimental and numerical investigation of the thermomechanical load on a turbine housing in a radial turbocharger

The fatigue life of turbine housing is an important index to measure the reliability of a radial turbocharger. The increase in turbine inlet temperatures in the last few years has resulted in a

Fast Calculation Methods for the Modelling of Transient Temperature Fields in a Steam Turbine in Pre-warming Operation

December 16-21 2017 Abstract In turbomachinery design the accurate prediction of the life cycle is one of the most challenging issues. Nowadays, due to the thermodynamic optimization of operating

An experimental procedure to determine heat transfer properties of turbochargers

Heat transfer phenomena in turbochargers have been a subject of investigation due to their importance for the correct determination of compressor real work when modelling. The commonly stated

The Analysis of Heat Transfer in Automotive Turbochargers

Heat transfers in an automotive turbocharger comprise significant energy flows, but are rarely measured or accounted for in any turbocharger performance assessment. Existing measurements suggest that

A Three-Dimensional Conjugate Heat Transfer Model of a Turbocharger Turbine Housing

The turbine housing is subjected to thermal load which is essential to be taken into account in the design process. In this paper, a three-dimensional conjugate heat transfer simulation of a

Thermal Structural Analysis of the Engine Turbocharger under the Transient Temperature History Corresponding to the Motoring Fatigue Test

Abstract : Fatigue cracks of the turbocharger are often observed for high performance engines under thermal shock tests. Maximum exhaust gas temperature of recently developed gasoline engines could
