The practices reported by midwives when assisting women who labour and/or give birth in water are described and the evidence which might underpin current clinical guidelines are discussed.

Waterbirth: updating the evidence

The ideological, controversial and professional positions taken up in recent literature on waterbirth are reviewed and three overviews of the practice are considered and the ‘outcomes’ evidence does not strongly support women's expressed beliefs about the efficacy of waterbirth.
