Preliminary modeling and experimental analyses of the violent reaction threshold of semi-heavily confined PBX 9501 to low velocity impact have been completed. Experimental threshold measurements were obtained with ten tests using a spigot gun design to launch a hemispherical projectile at the high explosive contained in stainless steel. Powder curves were determined for several gun barrel designs, powders, and projectile materials and have proven to be very reproducible over the range of 75 to…

Low amplitude insult project: PBX 9501 high explosive violent reaction experiments

The Modified Steven test geometry has been used with several different target designs to investigate the mechanical loading behavior of PBX 9501 to a low velocity impact. A 2 kg. mild steel spigot

Low amplitude impact testing and analysis of pristine and aged solid high explosives

The critical impact velocities of 60.1 mm diameter blunt steel projectiles required for ignition of exothermic chemical reaction were determined for heavily confined charges of new and aged (15-30

Shock initiation of new and aged PBX 9501 measured with embedded electromagnetic particle velocity gauges

We have used an embedded electromagnetic particle velocity gauge technique to measure the shock initiation behavior in PBX 9501 explosive. Up to twelve separate particle velocity wave profile

X-0557 modified Steven tests : series I and II /.

Low-velocity mechanical impact leading to unintentional reaction is of concern in accident scenarios involving the handling, transport, and storage of high explosives (HE). These have been

Numerical simulation of the initiation of explosive transformations in solid high explosives caused by low-velocity impacts

A possible mechanism of the formation of hotspots in a high explosive subjected to a low-velocity impact (50–100 m/s) is examined. The mechanism is based on the concept of heterogeneity of

Study on the Influence of Stiffness and Damping on the Response of the Projectile

Abstract Based on the typical characteristics of the actual projectile structure, a configuration structure reflecting the basic connection characteristics of the simulated charge and shell is

Validation study on a non-linear dynamical model of the projectile

Based on the theoretical approach of multi-body interaction dynamics, a theoretical model is constructed to simulate the nonlinear response amplification of the projectile structure. The accuracy and
