Permalloy bilayers grown in orthogonal applied fields demonstrated unusual coupling phenomena in Kerr-effect observations. The films were grown by ultrahigh-vacuum ion-beam sputtering in an applied field of 28 Oe that established a well-defined anisotropy direction. Midway through the deposition, the substrates were rapidly turned 90 degrees in the applied field, including an orthogonal anisotropy direction in the second layer of the film. With layers of equal thickness, a simple model predicts…

Magnetic Anisotropy of FeNi Multilayer Films with Different Orientations of the Magnetic Anisotropy Axes in Adjacent Layers

FeNi films were prepared using the DC magnetron sputtering technique with an oblique deposition arrangement. Multilayers with different orientations of the magnetic anisotropy axes were obtained

Analysis of Magnetization Dynamics in NiFe Thin Films with Growth-Induced Magnetic Anisotropies

We have used angled magnetron sputter deposition with and without sample rotation to control the magnetic anisotropy in 20 nm NiFe films. Ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, with data analysis

Magnetometry and transport data complement polarized neutron reflectometry in magnetic depth profiling

Exchange coupled magnetic hard layer/soft layer thin films show a variety of complex magnetization reversal mechanisms depending on the hierarchy of interaction strengths within and between the

Permalloy multilayers to reduce the effects of uniaxial anisotropy

The anisotropic magnetoresistance effect of Permalloy (Ni/sub 0.82/Fe/sub 0.18/) is used in a contactless angle detector. The uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in a Permalloy thin film causes a difference

Magnetic domain structures in multilayered NiFe films

The coercivity of NiFe (80/20) films can be lowered by laminating several layers with nonmagnetic spacers. A reduction by a factor of 10 can be achieved with a simple bi‐layer, regardless of spacer

Magnetic Film with Helical Anisotropy

A helical anisotropy film is characterized by the induced anisotropy of the form K sin2[π(z)−2πz/d], where K is the anisotropy constant, θ is the magnetization orientation, z is the coordinate along

Preparation of Thin Magnetic Films and Their Properties

Techniques for the preparation by vacuum evaporation of single thin layers and laminated structures of ferromagnetic alloys (principally in the iron‐nickel system) are described. The magnetic

Longitudinal kerr magneto-optic effect in thin films of Iron, nickel, and permalloy

The longitudinal Kerr magneto-optic effect can be characterized by four parameters n, k, Q0, and q. The first two parameters, n and k, are the ordinary optical refractive index and index of

Unidirectional anisotropy in nickel-iron films by exchange coupling with antiferromagnetic films

A new process for obtaining unidirectional anisotropy in 80:20 NiFe films is described. This process was applied to the biasing of a magnetoresistive (MR) read head and no Barkhausen noise was
