To evaluate the role of wildlife in the resurgence and perenisation of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), we investigated the influence of habitat and seasonal variations on the diversity and spatial distribution of wild mammals, with special reference to those recognised as potential host-reservoirs of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense in Bipindi (southwestern Cameroon). To achieve this, we carried out transect surveys in four habitat types over two years. A total of 31 mammal species were… Expand

TLDR
It was concluded that the association existing between bushbuck and G. pallidipes was extremely important in creating disease foci and that the spread of infections to man was largely a result of poaching activities. Expand

TLDR
Blood was collected from wild animals in three human African trypanosomiasis foci and from a nonendemic control area to study the existence of a wild animal reservoir for Trypanosoma brucei gambiense in South Cameroon. Expand
Identification of trypanosomes in wild animals from southern Cameroon using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
TLDR
PCR was used to detect the different trypanosome species present in wild animal captured by hunters in the southern forest belt of Cameroon and found parasites pathogenic to man in 164 animals belonging to 24 different species including ungulates, rodents, pangolins, carnivores, reptiles and primates. Epidemiological studies on the animal reservoir of Gambiense sleeping sickness. Part III. Characterization of trypanozoon stocks by isoenzymes and sensitivity to human serum.
TLDR
A group of closely related minor zymodemes constituted another trypanosome population ineffective to man in West Africa which had a variable sensitivity to normal human serum and had been previously associated with chronic gambiense sleeping sickness. Expand
Prevalence of domestic animal trypanosomiasis in the Fontem sleeping sickness focus, Cameroon.
TLDR
The absence of trypanosomes of the sub-genus Trypanozoon seems to indicate that human Africantrypanosomiasis is not a zoonosis in this sleeping sickness focus. Expand
A study of host preference in tsetse flies using a modified heteroduplex PCR-based method.
TLDR
A study of host preference in tsetse flies using a modified heteroduplex PCR-based method confirmed the occurrence of frequent contacts between wild animals and this population of tsete flies. Expand
The use of DNA hybridization and numerical taxonomy in determining relationships between Trypanosoma brucei stocks and subspecies.
TLDR
It is concluded that T. b.b. gambiense stands out as a real subspecies that has undergone a distinct evolution relative to the 'non-gambiense' group, and domestic animals like pig, dog and sheep constitute a potential reservoir for T.b.'s gamiense. Expand
