Aging in female rats is associated with cessation of reproductive cycles, development of mammary cancer, and increased incidence of autoimmune diseases. Previously, we demonstrated an age-related decline in sympathetic noradrenergic (NA) innervation in the spleen and lymph nodes of female F344 rats accompanied by significantly reduced natural killer cell activity, interleukin (IL)-2 and interferon (IFN)-γ production, and T- and B-cell proliferation, suggesting possible links between sympathetic…

Deprenyl, an old drug with new anticancer potential: Mini review

DEP emerges as an excellent potential drug against several cancer types and it also presents low toxicity in Parkinson`s disease patients subjected to long treatment with it.

Phytochemicals in Morinda citrifolia fruit selectively modulate age-associated immunity and antioxidant enzyme activities through ERK pathway in splenic lymphocytes of male F344 rats

It is suggested that Noni fruit juices with or without seeds modulate cell-mediated immunity and antioxidant enzyme activities based on the phytochemicals that may differentially influence cell signaling and therefore, age-associated immunity.

Ontogenetic patterns of microarchitectural modulations in the spleen of the growing and aging rats

It is demonstrated that developmental changes in the spleen of the growing rats occur faster than it was described in classical papers on postnatal spleen development over fifty years ago.

Loss of Sympathetic Nerves in Spleens from Patients with End Stage Sepsis

The spleen is an important site for central regulation of immune function by noradrenergic sympathetic nerves, but little is known about this major region of neuroimmune communication in humans.

Autonomic nervous system and immune system interactions.

Both sympathetic and parasympathetic arms of the autonomic nervous system are instrumental in orchestrating neuroimmune processes, although additional studies are required to understand dynamic and complex adrenergic-cholinergic interactions.

It seems likely that there is not a real decline of immunity during aging, but there is a remodeling of the system according to the claims of senescence, and there are some drugs and antioxidants that prolong lifespan and also improve immunity.

The immune response of female BALB/c mice of different ages and identified significant age-related alterations suggest that there are significant changes in the organization of the immune system throughout life.
