We study spherically symmetric solutions in f(R) theories and its compatibility with local tests of gravity. We start by clarifying the range of validity of the weak field expansion and show that, for many models proposed to address the dark energy problem, this expansion breaks down in realistic situations. This invalidates the conclusions of several papers that make inappropriate use of this expansion. For the stable models that modify gravity only at small curvatures we find that when the…

Linear Growth of Matter Density Perturbations in Theories

We derive the equation of matter density perturbations on sub-horizon scales around a flat Friedmann-Lemaˆ itre-Robertson-Walker background for the general Lagrangian density f (R, G) that is a

Constraints on scalar-tensor models of dark energy from observational and local gravity tests

We construct a family of viable scalar-tensor models of dark energy (DE) which possess a phase of late-time acceleration preceded by a standard matter era, while at the same time satisfying the local

Cosmological evolution in f(R) gravity and a logarithmic model

In this paper, we revisit the conditions for cosmological viability of f(R) gravity and formulate them in terms of constraints on the potential of the scalaron field f'. When the scalaron is heavy,

Metric gravity theories and cosmology: I. Physical interpretation and viability

We critically review some concepts underlying current applications of gravity theories with Lagrangians L = f(gμν, Rαβμν) to cosmology to account for the accelerated expansion of the universe. We

An updated analysis of two classes of f(R) theories of gravity

The observed accelerated cosmic expansion can be a signature of fourth-order gravity theories, where the acceleration of the Universe is a consequence of departures from Einstein General Relativity,

An updated analysis of two classes of f(R) theories of gravity

The observed accelerated cosmic expansion can be a signature of fourth-order gravity theories, where the acceleration of the Universe is a consequence of departures from Einstein General Relativity,

N on-linear evolution of f(R) cosm ologies II:power spectrum

We carry out a suite of cosmological simulations of modified action f(R) models where cosmic acceleration arises from an alteration of gravity instead of dark energy. These models introduce an extra

Solar System constraints to general f(R) gravity

It has been proposed that cosmic acceleration or inflation can be driven by replacing the Einstein-Hilbert action of general relativity with a function f(R) of the Ricci scalar R. Such f(R) gravity

Models of f(R) Cosmic Acceleration that Evade Solar-System Tests

We study a class of metric-variation fRmodels that accelerates the expansion without a cosmological constant and satisfies both cosmological and solar-system tests in the small-field limit of the

The interaction between dark energy and dark matter and its connection to the modified gravity

We review the conformal equivalence in describing the background expansion of the universe by f(R) gravity both in the Jordan frame and the Einstein frame. In the Jordan frame, we present the general

Consistent long distance modification of gravity from inverse powers of the curvature

In this paper we study long distance modifications of gravity obtained by considering actions that are singular in the limit of vanishing curvature. In particular, we showed in a previous publication

Modified gravity, Dark Energy and MOND

We propose a class of actions for the spacetime metric that introduce corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian depending on the logarithm of some curvature scalars. We show that for some

Modified gravity, dark energy and modified Newtonian dynamics

We propose a class of actions for the spacetime metric that introduce corrections to the Einstein–Hilbert Lagrangian depending on the logarithm of some curvature scalars. We show that for some

Large scale structure of f(R) gravity

We study the evolution of linear cosmological perturbations in f(R) models of accelerated expansion in the physical frame where the gravitational dynamics are fourth order and the matter is minimally

Chameleon Cosmology

The evidence for the accelerated expansion of the Universe and the time dependence of the fine-structure constant suggests the existence of at least one scalar field with a mass of order H0. If such

Reconciling dark energy models with f(R) theories

Higher-order theories of gravity have recently attracted a lot of interest as alternative candidates to explain the observed cosmic acceleration without the need of introducing any scalar field. A

MODIFIED F (R) GRAVITY CONSISTENT WITH REALISTIC COSMOLOGY: FROM A MATTER DOMINATED EPOCH TO A DARK ENERGY UNIVERSE

We develop the general scheme for modified f(R) gravity reconstruction from any realistic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology. We formulate several versions of modified gravity compatible with

Palatini form of 1/R gravity.

It is shown that the original version of this theory disagrees with solar system observations, and is equivalent to a scalar-tensor theory in which the scalar field kinetic energy term is absent from the action.
