In digitonin-permeabilized bovine adrenal medullary cells, arachidonic acid and oleic acid, the cis-unsaturated fatty acids, enhanced Ca2+-induced secretion of catecholamines, whereas elaidic acid, a trans-unsaturated fatty acid and stearic acid, a saturated fatty acid, had no effect. Indomethacin, an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase and nordihydroguaiaretic acid, an inhibitor of lipoxygenase, failed to inhibit the stimulatory effect of arachidonic acid.
