Mechanisms underlying the negative inotropic response to alpha-adrenoceptor stimulation in adult mouse ventricular myocardium were studied. In isolated ventricular tissue, phenylephrine (PE), in the presence of propranolol, decreased contractile force by approximately 40% of basal value.
