Summary Zonal separations in the centrifuge have been obtained by floating a layer of a solution of particles on a second solution which has a density gradient and in which the particles are soluble. During subsequent centrifugation all those particles of the same size, shape, and density sedimented as a zone. The method has been applied to potato yellowdwarf virus (Aureogenus vastans) using sucrose solutions for the density gradient.
