OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient who developed visual perception distortion after a single dose of zolpidem. CASE SUMMARY: A 50-year-old Asian woman had been prescribed conjugated estrogen 1 tablet daily for hormone replacement therapy and tricalcium phosphate twice daily for osteoporosis. One day, she took zolpidem 10 mg for insomnia as well as acetaminophen 500 mg for headache at bedtime and began to have visual perception distortion (e.g., the shapes of objects were twisted, houses were… Expand
Zolpidem May Cause Visual Distortions and Other Psychotic Symptoms
TLDR
The case illustrated here describes distortion of visual perception that can occur after ingestion of more than the recommended dosage of zolpidem and the presence of a psychotic disorder or anorexia nervosa when taking zolPidem are risk factors for visual distortions. Expand
An unusual presentation of visual hallucinations with zolpidem: a case report
TLDR
A case of zolpidem induced visual hallucinations when used alone and also which disappeared with proper assurance to the patient in subsequent use is reported. Expand
Adverse reactions to zolpidem: case reports and a review of the literature.
TLDR
Primary care physicians should be alert to the possible unusual complex adverse effects of zolpidem, a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic widely prescribed in clinical practice for the treatment of insomnia, which is clinically very effective in treating insomnia. Expand
Two cases of zolpidem-associated homicide.
TLDR
2 cases are presented in which individuals killed their spouses and claimed total or partial amnesia after concomitant use of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) in addition to an SSRI (paroxetine). Expand
Zolpidem reduces the blood oxygen level-dependent signal during visual system stimulation
TLDR
Zolpidem's modulation of the BOLD signal within the visual cortex is consistent with the abundant distribution of GABA(A) receptors localized in this region, as well as previous studies showing a relationship between increased GABA-mediated neuronal inhibition and a reduction in BOLD activation. Expand
The risks of pharmacological therapy for insomnia (part 1): update for the clinical nurse specialist.
Recently, I reviewed the case of a 58-year-old man who experienced an adverse drug event in the hospital. The patient received a benzodiazepine sedative hypnotic orally at bedtime. Approximately 2Expand
A therapeutic dose of zolpidem reduces thalamic GABA in healthy volunteers: a proton MRS study at 4 T
TLDR
Zolpidem engendered primarily dysphoric-like effects and the correlation between reduced thalamic GABA and “dizzy” may be a function of zolPidem’s interaction with α1GABAA receptors in the cerebellum, projecting through the vestibular system to the thalamus. Expand

TLDR
Zolpidem needs to be prescribed judiciously with the caution of potential side effects particularly in females, especially in females without any history of psychiatric disorders. Expand
Zolpidem-induced suicide attempt: a case report
TLDR
An Iranian 27-year-old man with no known mood disorder or neuropsychological disease who attempted suicide upon taking zolpidem is described, suggesting a possible correlation between zolPidem psychological effects and dangerous psychological behaviors. Expand
Shock-Like Sensations Associated with Antidepressant Withdrawal Acute Tumor Lysis Syndrome Caused by Hydroxyurea Zolpidem-Induced Visual Hallucinations Tooth Discoloration with Linezolid Sleepwalking Caused by SSRI ADR-Related Reports from the Archives of Internal Medicine
The purpose of this feature is to heighten awareness of specific adverse drug reactions (ADRs), to discuss methods of prevention, and to promote reporting of ADRs to the FDA's medWatch programExpand

Delirium Associated with Zolpidem
TLDR
The patient in this report had factors such as age, gender, and hypoalbuminemia, which may have increased the maximum concentration and the AUC of zolpidem and possibly increased her risk of an adverse reaction. Expand

TLDR
Two additional cases are reported in which zolpidem was implicated in psychotic reactions characterized by auditory and visual hallucinations as well as delusional thinking, and both patient's symptoms resolved with the discontinuation of zolPidem use. Expand
Zolpidem-associated hallucinations and serotonin reuptake inhibition: a possible interaction.
TLDR
It is suggested that a pharmacodynamic interaction between serotonin reuptake inhibition and zolpidem may lead to prolonged zolPidem-associated hallucinations in susceptible individuals. Expand

TLDR
Supportive care, activated charcoal in large ingestions, and observation until symptoms resolve may be sufficient in most pediatric cases of zolpidem exposures, but emesis is not a treatment option. Expand
