Cognitive impairment, a central characteristic of schizophrenia, can profoundly limit patients' ability to acquire or maintain skills needed for adequate functioning. Thus, research on the efficacy of antipsychotic medications is increasingly focusing on the possible benefits of these agents on cognitive function.
