Isolates of Amanita muscaria and Paxillus involutus from sites showing a range of levels of zinc contamination were able to grow on media containing up to about 3 mM zinc, considerably higher than the concentration tolerated by higher plants in parallel experiments. Two isolates of A. muscaria were even more tolerant than this, but no correlation was found between tolerance and the toxicity of the soil of origin.
