Zeno's paradox in quantum theory
@inproceedings{Misra1976ZenosPI, title={Zeno's paradox in quantum theory}, author={B. Misra and E. C. George Sudarshan}, year={1976} }
A quantum-theoretic expression is sought for the probability that an unstable particle prepared initially in a well-defined state will be found to decay sometime during a given interval. It is argued that probabilities like this which pertain to continuous monitoring possess operational meaning. A simple natural approach to this problem leads to the startling conclusion that an unstable particle which is continuously observed whether it decays will never be found to decay. Since recording the…

Small-time behaviour of quantum nondecay probability and Zeno's paradox in quantum mechanics
- Physics
- 1979
SummaryA detailed investigation of the small-time deviations of the quantum nondecay probability from a pure exponential is made to study their physical consequences. Specific consideration is given…
Exponential Decay and Fermi's Golden Rule from an Uncontrolled Quantum Zeno Effect
- Physics
- 2013
We modify the theory of the Quantum Zeno Effect to make it consistent with the postulates of quantum mechanics. This modification allows one, throughout a sequence of observations of an excited…
Continuous measurements in quantum theory
- Physics

I t has been questioned recently by various authors (1-4) the meaningfulness of cont inuous (in time) measurements in quantum mechanics; problems arise because of the, eventually apparent,…
Do we really understand quantum mechanics? Strange correlations, paradoxes, and theorems
- Physics
- 2001
This article presents a general discussion of several aspects of our present understanding of quantum mechanics. The emphasis is put on the very special correlations that this theory makes possible:…
Measuring processes in quantum mechanics I. Continuous observation and the watchdog effect
- Physics
- 1981
It is well known that successive observations of the instantaneous state of a decaying system lead to a modified decay law. In the limit of infinitely frequent observations, the modified lifetime…
MATHEMATICS OF THE QUANTUM ZENO EFFECT
- Physics
- 2003
We present an overview of the mathematics underlying the quan- tum Zeno effect. Classical, functional analytic results are put into perspec- tive and compared with more recent ones. This yields some…
Consistent interpretations of quantum mechanics

Within the last decade, significant progress has been made towards a consistent and complete reformulation of the Copenhagen interpretation (an interpretation consisting in a formulation of the…
Quantum mechanics and the direction of time
- Physics

In recent papers the authors have discussed the dynamical properties of “large Poincaré systems” (LPS), that is, nonintegrable systems with a continuous spectrum (both classical and quantum). An…

The decay-scattering system
- Physics, Mathematics

. A decay-scattering system is defined in order to unify the mathematical treatment of scattering resonances and unstable particles. The decay law of an unstable particle, the inverse decay problem,…
