The zebrafish, Danio rerio, has emerged as a major model organism for biomedical research, yet little is known about its natural history. We review the literature pertaining to the geographic range, biotic and abiotic habitats, and life cycle of the zebrafish. We also report our own field study to document several aspects of zebrafish natural history across sites in northeast India. We found zebrafish particularly abundant in silt-bottomed, well-vegetated pools and rice paddies adjacent to slow…

The Zebrafish, Danio rerio, is a well-known vertebrate model species widely used in research associated with biomedical areas and comparative and evolutionary biology, but little is known about the natural history, habitats, and native distribution.
On the Observation of Wild Zebrafish (Danio rerio) in India.
- Biology, Environmental ScienceZebrafish
- 2019
It is shown that the breeding period of wild zebrafish can be extended from the previous record of April-August to April-October, and practical advice is provided for future zebra fish expeditions to this rural and inaccessible area.

An orientation to the zebrafish as a model system is provided, from its ecology and life history to its early use in research and adoption as a key genetic model for vertebrate development.
The zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model organism, with emphasis on applications for finfish aquaculture research
- Biology
- 2014
The zebrafish is likely to play an increasing role as a model organism in many areas of research for finfish aquaculture, which include, but are not limited to, development, immunology, genomics and reproduction.
Collective Behavior in Wild Zebrafish.
- Environmental Science, BiologyZebrafish
- 2020
Zebrafish in flowing water formed volatile groups, whereas those in still water had more consistent membership and leadership, which point to a possible profound role of water flow in influencing collective behavior in wild zebrafish.
The behaviour and ecology of the zebrafish, Danio rerio
- Biology, PsychologyBiological reviews of the Cambridge Philosophical Society

The zebrafish Danio rerio, is an important model organism in developmental genetics, neurophysiology and biomedicine, but little is known about its natural ecology and behaviour. It is a small,…
Reproductive behaviour of wild zebrafish (Danio rerio) in large tanks
- Environmental Science, Biology
- 2010
It is found that the fish usually spawned in pairs rather than in groups, and evidence for sexual selection is found, suggesting that high rates of group spawning may be an artefact of small aquaria, which may reduce or eliminate sexual selection.

Gut content analyses of 327 individuals representing 17 populations showed that insects were the primary food resource for the eight Danio and Devario species and stable isotope data from syntopic species indicated long-term differences in consumption of terrestrial v. aquatic insects in one of two population pairs.

Zebrafish hybrids suggest genetic mechanisms for pigment pattern diversification in Danio
- BiologyDevelopment Genes and Evolution
- 2001
Analysis of phylogenetic relationships of danio fishes and the phenotypes of interspecific hybrids support a model in which pigment pattern differences between D. rerio and other species result from gain-of-function alleles in D. Rerio, or loss- of-functionalleles in other danios.
