It is generally considered that animal cloning by nuclear transfer originated in proposals made by Hans Spemann (1936), following his experiments on delayed nucleation in the newt egg, which were preceded by similar attempts using the sea-urchin egg (Loeb, 1894). Briggs and King (1952) were the first to succeed in transplanting blastula and gastrula nuclei into the enucleated frog egg and in obtaining a significant number of normal tadpoles by means of this technique. We present evidence that…

August Rauber (1841-1917): from the primitive streak to Cellularmechanik.

  • 2006
TLDR
This paper reconstructs some of Rauber's work and concludes that his observations and reflections constituted a new approach combining embryology and histology with "phylogenetic" reasoning.
Origin and progress of nuclear transfer in nonmammalian animals.
TLDR
Classic studies in cytology, embryology, or genetics spanning more than five centuries that led to nuclear transfers in unicellular animals and to those in oocytes of insects, fish and amphibians are reviewed.
Somatic cell nuclear transfer: origins, the present position and future opportunities
TLDR
The new procedure has been used to target the first precise genetic modification into livestock; however, the greatest inheritance of the Dolly experiment was to make biologists think differently.
25th ANNIVERSARY OF CLONING BY SOMATIC CELL NUCLEAR TRANSFER Generation of genetically engineered livestock using somatic cell nuclear transfer
TLDR
Development of somatic cell nuclear transfer has bypassed the need in livestock ESCs and revolutionized the field of livestock transgenesis by offering the first cell-based platform for precise genetic manipulation in farm animals.
Are we Genomic Mosaics? Variations of the Genome of Somatic Cells can Contribute to Diversify our Phenotypes
TLDR
Theoretical and experimental evidences support the hypothesis that the genomes and the epigenomes may be different in the somatic cells of complex organisms, and the possibility that a single genome has the capacity to generate several different brains in response to different environments.
A history of embryonic stem cell research: Concepts, laboratory work, and contexts
TLDR
In this thesis, the genetic paradigm is shown to be influential from the early twentieth century onwards, and it has been proposed that stem cell research needs to undergo a paradigm shift, from the stem cell entity view, to the stemcell state view.
Somatic cell nuclear reprogramming of mouse oocytes endures beyond reproductive decline
TLDR
Results strongly suggest that oocyte‐induced reprogramming outcome is determined by the availability and balance of intrinsic pro‐ and anti‐reprogramming factors tightly regulated and even improved throughout aging, leading to the proposal that oocytes can still be a resource for somatic reprograming when they cease to be considered safe for sexual reproduction.
Phenotypes of Aging Postovulatory Oocytes After Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer in Mice.
TLDR
Rec reconstructed mouse oocytes using SCNT to reveal the effect of somatic cell-derived nuclei on oocyte physiology during aging, and found that SCNT oocytes age in a similar but distinct way, suggesting that they not only contain nuclei with abnormal epigenetics but are also physiologically different.
Scaling of morphogenetic patterns in continuous and discrete models
TLDR
The definition of scaling is applied and modifications of mathematical models, in particular, two famous continuous models (Turing and Fitzhugh-Nagumo) are introduced to achieve scaling of their solutions to analyse properties of concentration profiles arising in various continuous models.
Nuclear Transplantation
TLDR
Nuclear transplantation has allowed experimental embryologists to manipulate the development of an organism and to study the potential of the nucleus to direct development.

TLDR
The role of the nucleus in embryonic differentiation has been the subject of investigations dating back to the beginnings of experimental embryology, and the known cytogenetical mechanisms that could account for nuclear differentiation have been indicated.
Animal cloning--the route to new genomics in agriculture and medicine.
This paper reviews the origin and development of animal cloning in metazoans starting with primitive experiments performed during the late 1880's and early 1900's, followed by nuclear transplantation

The Germ-Plasm: A Theory of Heredity
TLDR
This reprint is of the first English translation of the germ plasm theory, a key text in the debate over the inheritance of acquired characters and subsequently guided much of the work within genetics and embryology in the 20th century.
Shaking a concept: Hans Driesch and the varied fates of sea urchin blastomeres
  • K. Sander
  • History
    Roux's archives of developmental biology

TLDR
This essay deals with the shaking and compressing of cleavage stage sea urchin eggs, and served more than any others to shake confidence in the then widely accepted concept of mosaic development.
Genomic potential of differentiated cells analyzed by nuclear transplantation
TLDR
Results of nuclear transplantation experiments in amphibian oocytes and eggs suggest that the genetic totipotency of at least some differentiated somatic cell types still remains a tenable hypothesis.

TLDR
The embryological work of Laurent Chabry consists of his doctoral thesis, Embryologie normale et teratologique des Ascidies simples (1887), supplemented by some research on the sea urchin egg (1886–1889), and a series of investigations on mecanique cellulaire.
