Although we already possess much information about early alphabetic writing attempts (see for example Read, 1975; Clay, 1975; Ferreiro and Teberovsky, 1979), little or nothing is known about the construction of the written number system during the preschool years. Psychologists interested in the domain of number and studying preschool children have concentrated on conceptual development, or on verbal representations: counting. (But see for example Kamii, 1980; Sastre and Moreno, 1976).
