The densities in the outer regions of clusters of galaxies are very low, and the collisional timescales are very long. As a result, heavy elements will be under-ionized after they have passed through the accretion shock. We have studied systematically the effects of non-equilibrium ionization for relaxed clusters in the ΛCDM cosmology using one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. We found that non-equilibrium ionization effects do not depend on cluster mass, but depend strongly on redshift… Expand
X-Ray Spectroscopy of Galaxy Clusters: Beyond the CIE Modeling
X-ray spectra of galaxy clusters are dominated by the thermal emission from the hot intracluster medium. In some cases, besides the thermal component, spectral models require additional componentsExpand
Non-Equilibrium Ionization State and Two-Temperature Structure in the Bullet Cluster 1E 0657−56
We investigate a non-equilibrium ionization state and an electron–ion two-temperature structure of the intracluster medium in the merging galaxy cluster, 1E 0657 56 (Bullet cluster), using a seriesExpand
Shock fronts, electron-ion equilibration and ICM transport processes in the merging cluster Abell 2146
We present a new 400 ks Chandra X-ray observation of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2146. This deep observation reveals detailed structure associated with the major merger event including the MachExpand
Suzaku X-ray Observations of the Nearest Non-Cool Core Cluster, Antlia: Dynamically Young but with Remarkably Relaxed Outskirts
We present the results of seven Suzaku mosaic observations (>200 ks in total) of the nearest non-cool core cluster, the Antlia Cluster (or Group), beyond its degree-scale virial radius in its easternExpand
Outskirts of Galaxy Clusters
Until recently, only about 10 % of the total intracluster gas volume had been studied with high accuracy, leaving a vast region essentially unexplored. This is now changing and a wide area of hot gasExpand

Non‐equilibrium ionization model for stellar cluster winds and its application
We have developed a self-consistent physical model for superstellar cluster winds based on combining a 1D steady-state adiabatic wind solution and a non-equilibrium ionization calculation. ComparingExpand
The collisionless accretion shock at the outer boundary of a galaxy cluster should primarily heat the ions instead of electrons since they carry most of the kinetic energy of the infalling gas. NearExpand
Supernova Remnants in the Sedov Expansion Phase: Thermal X-Ray Emission
Improved calculations of X-ray spectra for supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Sedov-Taylor phase are reported, which for the first time include reliable atomic data for Fe L-shell lines. This new setExpand
Self-consistent models for the X-ray emission from supernova remnants
A tool for exploring the evolution of X-ray emission from young SNRs is presented which employs a novel approach to the problem of time-dependent ionization in a shock-heated plasma. The solution ofExpand
Hydrodynamic Simulations of Merging Galaxy Clusters: Non-Equilibrium Ionization State and Two-Temperature Structure
We investigate a non-equilibrium ionization state and an electron–ion two-temperature structure of the intracluster medium (ICM) in merging galaxy clusters using a series of N -body and hydrodynamicExpand
Radiative Transfer in a Clumpy Universe. II. The Ultraviolet Extragalactic Background
We present a detailed calculation of the propagation of AGN-like ionizing radiation through the intergalactic space. We model the ionization state of absorbing clouds, and show that the universe willExpand

We have devised a method to do nonequilibrium ionization calculations on the results of two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, based on the algorithm of Hughes & Helfand (1985). We haveExpand
Non-Equilibrium Electrons and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect of Galaxy Clusters
We present high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of three galaxy clusters employing a two-temperature model for the intracluster medium. We show that electron temperatures in clusterExpand

Simulation of soft X-ray emission lines from the missing baryons
We study the soft X-ray emission (0.1-1 keV) from the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) in a hydrodynamic simulation of a cold dark matter universe. Our main goal is to investigate how suchExpand
