A bstractIn this paper we show that the number of all 1/2-BPS branes in string theory compactified on a torus can be derived by universal wrapping rules whose formulation we present. These rules even apply to branes in less than ten dimensions whose ten-dimensional origin is an exotic brane. In that case the wrapping rules contain an additional combinatorial factor that is related to the highest dimension in which the ten-dimensional exotic brane, after compactification, can be realized as a…

Weaving the exotic web

A bstractString and M-theory contain a family of branes forming U -duality multiplets. In particular, standard branes with codimension higher than or equal to two, can be explicitly found as

Exotic branes in Exceptional Field Theory: the SL(5) duality group

A bstractWe study how exotic branes, i.e. branes whose tensions are proportional to gs−  α, with α > 2, are realised in Exceptional Field Theory (EFT). The generalised torsion of the Weitzenböck

Exotic branes in Exceptional Field Theory: E7(7) and beyond

A bstractIn recent years, it has been widely argued that the duality transformations of string and M-theory naturally imply the existence of so-called ‘exotic branes’ — low codimension objects with

Space-filling branes & gaugings

A bstractWe consider in any dimension the supersymmetric ℤ2 truncations of the maximal supergravity theories. In each dimension and for each truncation we determine all the sets of 1/2-BPS

We revisit curious objects in string and M-theory called exotic brane---objects that are highly non-perturbative, possessing a tension that scales less than $g_s^{-2}$ and are generically of

The geometry, branes and applications of exceptional field theory

This is a review of exceptional field theory: a generalisation of Kaluza-Klein theory that unifies the metric and $p$-form gauge field degrees of freedom of supergravity into a generalised or

We revisit a correspondence between toroidal compactifications of M-theory and del Pezzo surfaces, in which rational curves on the del Pezzo are related to ${1\over 2}$-BPS branes of the

Exotic branes and mixed-symmetry potentials. I. Predictions from E11 symmetry

Type II string theory or M-theory contains a broad spectrum of gauge potentials. In addition to the standard $p$-form potentials, various mixed-symmetry potentials have been predicted, which may

We investigate the hierarchies of half-supersymmetric branes in maximal supergravity theories. By studying the action of the Weyl group of the U-duality group of maximal supergravities we discover a

Exceptional M-brane sigma models and η-symbols

We develop the M-brane actions proposed in arXiv:1607.04265 by using $\eta$-symbols determined in arXiv:1708.06342. Introducing $\eta$-forms that are defined with the $\eta$-symbols, we present

Heterotic wrapping rules

A bstractWe show that the same wrapping rules that have been derived for the branes of IIA and IIB string theory also apply to the branes of the toroidally compactified heterotic string theory.

Branes and wrapping rules

We show that the branes of ten-dimensional IIA/IIB string theory must satisfy, upon toroidal compactification, specific wrapping rules in order to reproduce the number of supersymmetric branes that

Non-geometric orbifolds and wrapping rules

A bstractWe show that the number of half-supersymmetric p-branes in the Type II theories compactified on orbifolds is determined by the wrapping rules recently introduced, provided that one accounts

Heterotic-Type II duality and wrapping rules

The D-brane U-scan

We consider the D-branes that occur in IIA/IIB string theory compactified on a torus. We review how a general expression for the Wess-Zumino term of such branes is derived. We also review the method
