We present new observations acquired with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer instrument on the Very Large Telescope in a quasar field that hosts a high column density damped Lyα absorber (DLA) at z ≈ 3.25. We detect Lyα emission from a nebula at the redshift of the DLA with line luminosity (27 ± 1) × 1041 erg s− 1, which extends over 37 ± 1 kpc above a surface brightness limit of 6 × 10−19 erg s− 1 cm− 2 arcsec− 2 at a projected distance of 30.5 ± 0.5 kpc from the quasar sightline. Two… Expand

Quasar Sightline and Galaxy Evolution (QSAGE) survey – I. The galaxy environment of O vi absorbers up to z = 1.4 around PKS 0232−04
We present the first results from a study of O vi absorption around galaxies at z < 1.44 using data from a near-infrared grism spectroscopic Hubble Space Telescope Large Programme, the QuasarExpand
Molecular Emission from a Galaxy Associated with a z~2.2 Damped Lyman-alpha Absorber
Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array, we have detected CO(3-2) line and far-infrared continuum emission from a galaxy associated with a high-metallicity ([M/H] = -0.27) dampedExpand
High-redshift damped Ly α absorbing galaxy model reproducing the N H I − Z distribution
We investigate how damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) at z ~ 2-3, detected in large optical spectroscopic surveys of quasars, trace the population of star-forming galaxies. Building on previousExpand
Into the Ly α jungle: exploring the circumgalactic medium of galaxies at z ∼ 4−5 with MUSE
We present a study of the galaxy environment of 9 strong HI+CIV absorption line systems ($16.2<{\rm log}(N({\rm HI}))<21.2$) spanning a wide range in metallicity at $z\sim4-5$, using MUSE integralExpand
Linking gas and galaxies at high redshift: MUSE surveys the environments of six damped Lyα systems at z ≈ 3
We present results from a survey of galaxies in the fields of six z ≥ 3 damped Lyman α (Lyα) systems (DLAs) using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). WeExpand
ALMACAL V: absorption-selected galaxies with evidence for excited ISMs
Gas-rich galaxies are selected efficiently via quasar absorption lines. Recently, a new perspective on such absorption-selected systems has opened up by studying the molecular gas content ofExpand
ALMACAL – III. A combined ALMA and MUSE survey for neutral, molecular, and ionized gas in an H i-absorption-selected system.
Studying the flow of baryons into and out of galaxies is an important part of understanding the evolution of galaxies over time. We present a detailed case study of the environment around anExpand
Quasars Probing Quasars. X. The Quasar Pair Spectral Database
The rare close projection of two quasars on the sky provides the opportunity to study the host galaxy environment of a foreground quasar in absorption against the continuum emission of a backgroundExpand
The detection of intergalactic H α emission from the Slug Nebula at z ∼ 2.3
The Slug Nebula is one of the largest and most luminous Lyman-alpha (LyA) nebulae discovered to date, extending over 450 kiloparsecs (kpc) around the bright quasar UM287 at z=2.283. Characterized byExpand
MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) – I: Survey design and the environment of a near pristine gas cloud at z ≈ 3.5
We present the design, methods, and first results of the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey, a large programme on the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument at the VeryExpand

Calibrating galaxy redshifts using absorption by the surrounding intergalactic medium
Rest-frame UV spectral lines of star-forming galaxies are systematically offset from the galaxies' systemic redshifts, probably because of large-scale outflows. We calibrate galaxy redshifts measuredExpand
Discovery of an Enormous Lyα Nebula in a Massive Galaxy Overdensity at z = 2.3
