Withering syndrome (WS) is a chronic wasting disease responsible for mass mortality in wild populations of black abalone Haliotis cracherodii. The etiology of WS is uncertain with limited evidence for the role of a gastrointestinal Rickettsiales-like prokaryote (RLP).
