He eventually became known as the "Plague Fighter of China." In particular, the epidemic of 1910-191 1 was his greatest challenge. The mortality was nearly 100%. He had to fight the unknown, as the cause of the mysterious disease causing death in a matter of days was not established; he had to fight fatalism due to ignorance and lack of education among the masses, and he even had to fight petty jealousy.
