Wine polyphenols are considered to have beneficial effects on CHD and atherosclerosis. The consumption of red wine is high in Italy and France, approximately four times greater than that in the UK. This disparity in red wine consumption is thought to be the reason for the ‘French paradox’, where France was shown to have a coronary mortality rate close to that of China or Japan despite saturated fat intakes and cholesterol levels similar to the UK and USA. In the present review, we discuss the…

Should Red Wine Be Considered a Functional Food?
TLDR
An overview of the accumulated evidence for the health benefits of wine-and its key phenolic components such as resveratrol, quercetin, catechin-and show that these alone are not enough to firmly establish wine as a functional food.
Grape powder polyphenols and atherosclerosis development.

TLDR
The findings that the administration of grape powder in water resulted in less severe atherosclerotic lesions in apolipoprotein E mice and reduced macrophage atherogenicity may or may not be due to the grape polyphenols as the authors implied.
Impact of short-term intake of red wine and grape polyphenol extract on the human metabolome.
TLDR
The results suggest that short-term intake of WGM altered microbial protein fermentation and/or amino acid metabolism, and overall, WGM had a mild impact on the endogenous metabolism.
Effect of Sulfites on Antioxidant Activity, Total Polyphenols, and Flavonoid Measurements in White Wine
TLDR
The addition of sulfites to organic white wines clearly resulted in a significant overestimation of antioxidant activity and polyphenols content, and in an underestimation of flavonoids concentration, and a purification procedure should be applied in order to evaluate the quality of white wine.
Determination of antioxidant capacity for some products based on wine and medicinal plants
The aim of this study is to find new natural remedies useful for body against oxidative stress (which induces dysfunction at the cellular level, various ailments in the human body). Its have been
Assessment of some Australian red wines for price, phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and vintage in relation to functional food prospects.
TLDR
The results highlight the variability in functional components as an issue that needs further research and consideration in relation to wine as a functional food.

Effect of red wine consumption on lipoprotein (a) and other risk factors for atherosclerosis.
TLDR
No effect with either treatment was detected on total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL or measures of antioxidant status, including the susceptibility of LDL to oxidation, and potential anti-atherogenic changes specific to red wine were reduction in lipoprotein and increased membrane fluidity.
Alcohol-free red wine enhances plasma antioxidant capacity in humans.
TLDR
The parallel and prompt increase of antioxidant status and of circulating levels ofpolyphenols in fasting subjects after bolus ingestion of a moderate amount of alcohol-free red wine suggests that polyphenols are absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract and might be directly involved in the in vivo antioxidant defenses.
Red wine, dealcoholized red wine, and especially grape juice, inhibit atherosclerosis in a hamster model.

Red Wine in Moderation: Potential Health Benefits Independent of Alcohol
TLDR
The data suggest that a moderate intake of red wine (1–2 drinks per day) may have potential health benefits independent of alcohol, and this warrants further clinical studies and epidemiologic investigations.
Red wine consumption does not affect oxidizability of low-density lipoproteins in volunteers.
TLDR
The results of this study do not show a beneficial effect of red wine consumption on LDL oxidation, and Concentrations of the antioxidants urate, vitamin C, and glutathione in plasma and of vitamin E and ubiquinol-10 in LDL were unchanged after either red or white wine consumption.
