I n August 1999 Bill Niering was the editor of this journal. He had just turned 75 and was charging into the start of another academic year, teaching undergraduates full time, dealing with his new data set from the Sonoran Desert, and pestering Paul Fell and me for revisions to a joint manuscript on the restoration ecology of Long Island Sound tidal marshes. In the traditional freshman orientation Bill spoke to the incoming class on the merits of good citizenship and environmental stewardship…
