In 1943 there appeared in Berichte der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft[1] a brief notice (Figure 1) of the death of Wilhelm Schlenk, the former President of the German Chemical Society (Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft).[2a] It was stated that a fuller biography of Schlenk would appear later, but this has not been forthcoming, although there were short articles in specialized Austrian[2b] and Bavarian[2c] journals. Underneath the notice about Schlenk there was a list of individuals who had… Expand

  • 2019
Use of these reagents in the conventional syntheses of anionic homoleptic arene metal complexes of the d-block elements will be described, and it is proposed that this valuable synthetic method be named the "Chatt reaction" in honor of a giant of chemistry. Expand
Radicals, Reactions, Realism
Since Lavoisier, the notion of radical has been used – and is still being used – in chemistry. It first was assigned to the assumed “acidic” core of acids, later to certain assumed fragments ofExpand
Between Nationalism and Internationalism: The German Chemical Society In Comparative Perspective, 1867-1945.

It is remembered that on the eve of German unification, about one-hundred people gathered in Berlin to found the German Chemical Society (DChG), which by 1892 was the world's largest chemical society. Expand
Alkaline Earth Organometallics
Abstract For over 100 years, the well-known and synthetically important Grignard reagents (RMgX) have dominated research in organoalkaline earth chemistry. Nevertheless, both the smallest (Be) andExpand
Introduction to Early Main Group Organometallic Chemistry and Catalysis
Although organometallic complexes of the early main groups are well known for their very high reactivity and challenging isolation, they are among the first studied during the pioneering beginningsExpand
2.02 – Alkaline Earth Organometallics
For over 100 years, the well-known and synthetically important Grignard reagents (RMgX) have dominated research in organoalkaline earth chemistry. Nevertheless, both the smallest (Be) and largestExpand
200 Years of Lithium and 100 Years of Organolithium Chemistry
The element lithium has been discovered 200 years ago. Due to its unique properties it has emerged to play a vital role in industry, esp. for energy storage, and lithium‐based products and processesExpand
Schlenk Techniques for Anionic Polymerization
Anionic polymerization-high vacuum techniques (HVTs) are doubtlessly the most prominent and reliable experimental tools to prepare polymer samples with well-defined and, in many cases, complexExpand
Analysis of the FASSST rotational spectrum of NCNCS in view of quantum monodromy.
The fast scan sub-millimetre spectroscopic technique (FASSST) is used to extend the measurements and spectral analysis to pure rotational transitions (end-over-end) in bending vibrational states lying well above the monodromy point, and the generalized semi-rigid bender (GSRB) Hamiltonian is described in some detail. Reactivity of Scandium β-Diketiminate Alkyl Complexes with Carbon Dioxide
The reactions of two highly air- and moisture-sensitive scandium bis(alkyls) supported by a bulky β-diketiminato (nacnac) ligand with carbon dioxide are described. [κ2-ArNC(tBu)CHC(tBu)NAr]ScR2 (Ar =Expand

The Expulsion of Jewish Chemists and Biochemists from Academia in Nazi Germany
In contrast to anti-Jewish campaigns at German universities in the 19th century, which met with opposition from liberal scholars, among them prominent chemists, there was no public reaction to theExpand
Structures of Three Lithium Ester Enolates by X-ray Diffraction: Derivation of Reaction Path for Cleavage into Ketene and Alcoholate'
Crystal structure analyses have been carried out for lithium enolates of the following three esters: tert-butyl propionate ((Z)-1), tert-butyl2-methylpropionate (2), and methyl 3,3-dimethylbutanoateExpand
Alkali and alkaline-earth metal ketyl complexes: isolation, structural diversity, and hydrogenation/protonation reactions
The use of hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA) as a stabilizing ligand allowed successful isolation of a series of structurally characterizable alkali metal and calcium ketyl complexes. Reaction ofExpand
The hexaphenylethane riddle
Abstract The correct quinoid structure for the dimer of triphenylmethyl radicals was proposed in 1904. By 1906 there existed three independent lines of evidence which support this structure:Expand
