Abstract We investigated the menstrual cycle of wild fulvous fruit bats (Rousettus leschenaulti), focusing on changes in the endometrial and ovarian structure and pituitary and steroid hormones. The menstrual cycle lasts for 33 days in bats studied in their natural habitat and in captivity. Vaginal bleeding was restricted to a single day (Day 1). A preovulatory follicle was found in the ovary on Day 18 when the levels of LH and FSH reached their maxima, accompanied by a thickened endometrium… Expand
Seasonal variation in the reproductive tract of the Indian flying fox, Pteropus giganteus (Brünnich, 1782)
TLDR
In flying foxes’ population of Pothwar, first mating was observed in December-January and second in June-July, suggesting two mating seasons in winter and summer. Expand
Morphophysiological variations of the female reproductive organs of the vespertilionid bat Myotis nigricans during its different reproductive phases.
TLDR
The results demonstrated that the female reproductive organs of M. nigricans were composed of the ovaries, the uterus, the uterine tubes and the vagina, in addition to the mammary glands, which present a great number of interstitial glands and a small but persistent corpus luteum. Expand
Chapter 13 c 0013 Hormones and Reproductive Cycles in Primates
p0010 SUMMARY p0015 Primates are characterized by long lifespans, slow reproductive processes, and low fecundity. Gonadarche is a late and prolonged process in which the maturation of theExpand
A missing piece: the spiny mouse and the puzzle of menstruating species.
TLDR
It is proposed that a ≥3-fold increase in progesterone during the luteal phase of the reproductive cycle is a unique characteristic linking menstruating species and why spontaneous decidualisation, and thus menstruation, evolved in these species. Expand
Ovulation, Fertilization, and Early Embryonic Development in the Menstruating Fruit Bat, Carollia perspicillata
TLDR
Several lines of evidence indicate that C. perspicillata is a spontaneous ovulator with a functional luteal phase, and menstruation is usually periovulatory in this species. Expand
Characteristics of the endometrium in menstruating species: lessons learned from the animal kingdom†
TLDR
What is currently known about menstruating animal species with special emphasis on non-primate species: length of their menstrual cycle, ovulation, implantation, placentation, decidualization, and endometrial characteristics is summarized. Expand
Morphometrics of Fulvous fruit bat (Rousettus leschenaulti) from Lahore, Pakistan.
Present study on Fulvous fruit bat (Rousettus leschenaulti) from October 2011 to March 2012 in the vicinity of Lahore, Pakistan took morphometric measurements of 15 (9♂ and 6♀) bat specimens. TheExpand
Monkeys, mice and menses: the bloody anomaly of the spiny mouse
TLDR
It is proposed that DHEA, synthesised by the spiny mouse (but not other rodents), humans and other menstruating primates, is integral in spontaneous decidualisation and therefore menstruation. Expand
Characterization of human-like menstruation in the spiny mouse: comparative studies with the human and induced mouse model
TLDR
The first to demonstrate a primate-like pattern of natural menstruation in a rodent, with decidualization, spiral arteriole remodeling and piece-meal endometrial shedding, supports the spiny mouse as a viable model, sharing many attributes of physiological menstruation with humans. Expand
Foraging areas of Rousettus leschenaulti on the Hainan Island of China
We investigated the foraging area of three individuals (1 female and 2 males) of Rousettus leschenaulti (Chiroptera, Pteropodidae) in suburban Haikou City, Hainan Province, South China from NovemberExpand

TLDR
The presence of regressing corpora lutea and well-developed endometria in these animals indicated that short-tailed fruit bats are spontaneous ovulators with a functional luteal phase to their cycles. Expand

TLDR
The ability to menstruate probably affords this bat an efficient mechanism for eliminating a highly differentiated endometrium from the usual implantation site in the event of a reproductive failure. Expand
Histochemical localization of enzymes and lipids in the ovary of a vespertilionid bat, Scotophilus heathi, during the reproductive cycle.
TLDR
A decline in enzymes and lipid activity during winter dormancy, which correlates with the declining levels of steroidogenesis, might be the factors responsible for prolonged survival of the Graafian follicle in the ovary of S. heathi. Expand
