Wide-band tracheids (WBTs) are novel tracheids with wide, lignified secondary walls that intrude deeply into the cell lumen when viewed in transverse sections. These tracheids are found in a few genera in related families in the order Caryophyllales: Aizoaceae, Cactaceae, and Portulacaceae.
