This paper serves as a case study of Japanese animation, commonly referred to in the Unites States as simply “anime,” and its unique niche in American entertainment and media. It treats anime as a medium separate from domestic cartoons, analyzing what about it has created a dedicated fandom in mainstream pop culture, and the effects this dedication has both in the United States and abroad.
