The potential of whole-cell matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) for the discovery of microorganisms that produce lantibiotics and/or bacteriocins in the mass range 3-5 kDa is demonstrated.
