We determined masses for the 7167 DA and 507 DB white dwarf stars classified as single and non-magnetic in Data Release 4 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We obtained revised T eff and log g determinations for the most massive stars by fitting the SDSS optical spectra with a synthetic spectra grid derived from model atmospheres extending to log g = 10.0. We also calculate radii from evolutionary models and create volume-corrected mass distributions for our DA and DB samples. The mean…

SDSS DR7 WHITE DWARF CATALOG

We present a new catalog of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarf stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 spectroscopic catalog. We find 20,407 white dwarf spectra,

DB white dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10 and 12

White dwarfs with helium-dominated atmospheres comprise approximately 20% of all white dwarfs. Among the open questions are the total masses and the origin of the hydrogen traces observed in a large

WHITE DWARF LUMINOSITY AND MASS FUNCTIONS FROM SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY SPECTRA

We present the first phase in our ongoing work to use Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data to create separate white dwarf (WD) luminosity functions (LFs) for two or more different mass ranges. In

A COMPREHENSIVE SPECTROSCOPIC ANALYSIS OF DB WHITE DWARFS

We present a detailed analysis of 108 helium-line (DB) white dwarfs based on model atmosphere fits to high signal-to-noise optical spectroscopy. We derive a mean mass of 0.67 M☉ for our sample, with

A SPECTROSCOPIC ANALYSIS OF WHITE DWARFS IN THE KISO SURVEY

We present a spectroscopic analysis of white dwarfs found in the Kiso survey. Spectroscopic observations at high signal-to-noise ratio have been obtained for all DA and DB stars in the Kiso Schmidt

The kinematics of the white dwarf population from the SDSS DR12

Abstract We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12, which is the largest available white dwarf catalog to date, to study the evolution of the kinematical properties of the population of

New white dwarf and subdwarf stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12

White dwarfs carry information on the structure and evolution of the Galaxy, especially through their luminosity function and initial-to-final mass relation. Very cool white dwarfs provide insight

AN IMPROVED SPECTROSCOPIC ANALYSIS OF DA WHITE DWARFS FROM THE SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY DATA RELEASE 4

We present an improved spectroscopic and photometric analysis of hydrogen-line DA white dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4) based on model atmospheres that include

A GRAVITATIONAL REDSHIFT DETERMINATION OF THE MEAN MASS OF WHITE DWARFS. DA STARS

We measure apparent velocities (vapp) of the Hα and Hβ Balmer line cores for 449 non-binary thin disk normal DA white dwarfs (WDs) using optical spectra taken for the European Southern Observatory SN

DA white dwarfs from the LSS-GAC survey DR1: the preliminary luminosity and mass functions and formation rate

Modern large-scale surveys have allowed the identification of large numbers of white dwarfs. However, these surveys are subject to complicated target selection algorithms, which make it almost
...

Mass distribution of DA white dwarfs in the first Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We investigate the sample of 1175 new nonmagnetic DA white dwarfs with the effective temperatures $T_{\rm eff} \ge 12\,000$ K, which were extracted from the Data Release 1 of the Sloan Digital Sky

Gemini spectra of 12 000 K white dwarf stars

We report signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) ≃ 100 optical spectra for four DA white dwarf stars acquired with the GMOS spectrograph of the 8-m Gemini north telescope. These stars have 18 < g < 19 and are

The Formation Rate and Mass and Luminosity Functions of DA White Dwarfs from the Palomar Green Survey

Spectrophotometric observations at high signal-to-noise ratio were obtained of a complete sample of 348 DA white dwarfs from the Palomar Green (PG) Survey. Fits of observed Balmer lines to synthetic

Spectral types and masses of white dwarfs in globular clusters

White dwarfs in globular clusters offer additional possibilities to determine distances and ages of globular clusters, provided their spectral types and masses are known. We therefore started a

A catalogue of isolated massive white dwarfs. Mass distribution of massive stars

We present in this paper a catalogue of 112 massive isolated white dwarfs, with masses M > 0.8 M . Mass deter- minations and other parameters of white dwarfs were compiled from the available

The Temperature Scale and Mass Distribution of Hot DA White Dwarfs

Results are presented from a comprehensive spectroscopic survey of DA white dwarfs hotter than ~25,000 K. The observations consisted of CCD spectra with signal-to-noise ratios of ~100 in the blue,

Temperatures and surface gravities of DB white dwarfs

Multichannel observations or reobservations of all DB white dwarfs accessible from Palomar Observatory, reduced and calibrated with the AB79 program of Oke and Gunn (1983), have been compared by

A Catalog of Spectroscopically Identified White Dwarf Stars in the First Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We present the full spectroscopic white dwarf and hot subdwarf sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) first data release, DR1. We find 2551 white dwarf stars of various types, 240 hot

A Comparative Study of the Mass Distribution of Extreme-Ultraviolet-selected White Dwarfs

We present new determinations of effective temperature, surface gravity, and masses for a sample of 46 hot DA white dwarfs selected from the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) and ROSAT Wide Field

Hot White Dwarfs in the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Survey. II. Mass Distribution, Space Density, and Population Age

We present new effective temperature and surface gravity determinations for a sample of 90 hot white dwarfs detected in the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) all-sky survey. The measurements, based
