We study the contribution of galaxies with different properties to the global densities of star formation rate (SFR), atomic (H I) and molecular hydrogen (H2) as a function of redshift. We use the GALFORM model of galaxy formation, which is set in the Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) framework. This model includes a self-consistent calculation of the SFR, which depends on the H2 content of galaxies. The predicted SFR density and how much of this is contributed by galaxies with different stellar masses…

The origin of the atomic and molecular gas contents of early-type galaxies – I. A new test of galaxy formation physics

We study the atomic (H I) and molecular hydrogen (H2) contents of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and their gas sources using the GALFORM model of galaxy formation. This model uses a self-consistent

The origin of the atomic and molecular gas contents of early-type galaxies - II. Misaligned gas accretion

We study the origin of the wide distribution of angles between the angular momenta of the stellar and gas components, αG, S, in early-type galaxies (ETGs). We use the GALFORM model of galaxy

Cosmic CARNage II: the evolution of the galaxy stellar mass function in observations and galaxy formation models

We present a comparison of the observed evolving galaxy stellar mass functions with the predictions of eight semi-analytic models and one halo occupation distribution model. While most models are

The distribution of neutral hydrogen around high-redshift galaxies and quasars in the EAGLE simulation

The observed high covering fractions of neutral hydrogen (HIHI) with column densities above ∼1017 cm−2 around Lyman-Break Galaxies (LBGs) and bright quasars at redshifts z ∼ 2–3 has been identified

THE STAR FORMATION RATE EFFICIENCY OF NEUTRAL ATOMIC-DOMINATED HYDROGEN GAS IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF STAR-FORMING GALAXIES FROM z ∼ 1 TO z ∼ 3

Current observational evidence suggests that the star formation rate (SFR) efficiency of neutral atomic hydrogen gas measured in damped Lyα systems (DLAs) at is more than 10 times lower than

THE GAS MASS OF STAR-FORMING GALAXIES AT z ≈ 1.3

We report a Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope search for H i 21 cm emission from a large sample of massive star-forming galaxies at z ≈ 1.18–1.34, lying in sub-fields of the DEEP2 Redshift Survey. The

The cosmic atomic hydrogen mass density as a function of mass and galaxy hierarchy from spectral stacking

We use spectral stacking to measure the contribution of galaxies of different masses and in different hierarchies to the cosmic atomic hydrogen (HI) mass density in the local Universe. Our sample

Atomic and molecular gas in IllustrisTNG galaxies at low redshift

We have recently developed a post-processing framework to estimate the abundance of atomic and molecular hydrogen (H i and H2, respectively) in galaxies in large-volume cosmological simulations.

Towards a consistent model for both the H i and stellar mass functions of galaxies

Using the L-Galaxies semi-analytic model we simultaneously fit the H I mass function, stellar mass function and the fraction of red galaxies. We find good fits to all three observations at z = 0 and

The unexpectedly large dust and gas content of quiescent galaxies at z > 1.4

Early-type galaxies (ETGs) contain most of the stars present in the local Universe and, above a stellar mass content of ~5 × 1010 solar masses, vastly outnumber spiral galaxies such as the Milky Way.

Cosmic evolution of the atomic and molecular gas contents of galaxies

We study the evolution of the cold gas content of galaxies by splitting the interstellar medium into its atomic and molecular hydrogen components, using the galaxy formation model galform in the Λ

Breaking the hierarchy of galaxy formation

Recent observations of the distant Universe suggest that much of the stellar mass of bright galaxies was already in place at z > 1. This presents a challenge for models of galaxy formation because

ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE MOLECULAR GAS FRACTION OF STAR-FORMING GALAXIES

We present IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometric detections of CO (J = 1 → 0) emission from a 24 μm-selected sample of star-forming galaxies at z = 0.4. The galaxies have polycyclic aromatic

THE STAR FORMATION HISTORY OF MASS-SELECTED GALAXIES IN THE COSMOS FIELD

We explore the redshift evolution of the specific star formation rate (SSFR) for galaxies of different stellar mass by drawing on a deep 3.6 μm selected sample of >105 galaxies in the 2 deg2 COSMOS

Simulations of the formation, evolution and clustering of galaxies and quasars

It is shown that baryon-induced features in the initial conditions of the Universe are reflected in distorted form in the low-redshift galaxy distribution, an effect that can be used to constrain the nature of dark energy with future generations of observational surveys of galaxies.

The effect of star formation on the redshift evolution of interstellar metals, atomic and molecular gas in galaxies

We examine how the atomic and molecular gas components of galaxies evolve to higher redshifts using the semi-analytic galaxy formation models of Fu et al. in which we track the surface density

Two phase galaxy formation: The Gas Content of Normal Galaxies

We investigate the atomic (H 1) and molecular (H 2 ) Hydrogen content of normal galaxies by combining observational studies linking galaxy stellar and gas budgets to their host dark matter (DM)

THE STAR FORMATION LAW IN NEARBY GALAXIES ON SUB-KPC SCALES

We present a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between star formation rate surface density, ΣSFR, and gas surface density, Σgas, at sub-kpc resolution in a sample of 18 nearby galaxies. We

Galaxy evolution in the infrared: comparison of a hierarchical galaxy formation model with Spitzer data

We present predictions for the evolution of the galaxy luminosity function, number counts and redshift distributions in the IR based on theCDM cosmological model. We use the combined GALFORM

Cool Gas in High-Redshift Galaxies

Over the past decade, observations of the cool interstellar medium (ISM) in distant galaxies via molecular and atomic fine structure line (FSL) emission have gone from a curious look into a few
