En 1978 et 1978, plusieurs tombes datant d'environ 1800-1600 av. J.-C. furent decouvertes dans la Tour Basse de la ville d'Ebla. Le tres riche mobilier funeraire que renfermait ces hypogees permit d'avancer qu'il s'agissait la de tombes princieres, et que les membres de la famille royale etaient traditionnellement enterres sous le sol des palais. L'auteur, a l'appui des textes d'archives datant de 2350-2300 av. J.-C., s'interroge sur les lieux d'inhumation des rois de l'Âge du Bronze ancien.
