We have determined the fraction of barred galaxies in the H-band for a statistically well-defined sample of 186 spirals. At H, 56% of our sample is strongly barred, 16% is weakly barred, and only 27% is unbarred. The RC3 and the Carnegie Atlas of Galaxies both classify roughly 30% of our sample as strongly barred. Thus strong bars are nearly twice as prevalent in the H-band as in the optical. Roughly 40% of the galaxies in our sample that are classified as unbarred in the RC3 show evidence for… Expand
A Dust-penetrated Classification Scheme for Bars as Inferred from Their Gravitational Force Fields
The division of galaxies into "barred" (SB) and "normal" (S) spirals is a fundamental aspect of the Hubble galaxy classification system. This "tuning fork" view was revised by de Vaucouleurs, whoseExpand
An Optical Study of a Sample of Spiral Galaxies
We present the first results of an observational project aimed at producing a database of nearby face-on spiral galaxies in the optical. The project is being run at the IAC-80 telescope in Tenerife.Expand
Investigating the Environmental Properties of Galaxies in the SDSS-MaNGA Survey
This thesis presents a study of galaxy evolution in the local universe. I study how environments shape the structures of galaxies, and how internal and external processes affect star formation. IExpand
The aim of this master's thesis is the classification of images of galaxies according to their morphological features using computer vision and artificial intelligence techniques. We dealExpand
Bars formed in galaxy merging and their classification with deep learning
Stellar bars are a common morphological feature of spiral galaxies. While it is known that they can form in isolation, or be induced tidally, few studies have explored the production of stellar barsExpand

The Frequency of Barred Spiral Galaxies in the Near-Infrared*
We have determined the fraction of barred galaxies in the H-band for a statistically well-defined sample of 186 spirals drawn from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey. We find 56%Expand
Dynamics of Barred Galaxies
Some 30% of disc galaxies have a pronounced central bar features in the disc plane and many more have weaker features of a similar kind. Kinematic data indicate that the bar constitutes a majorExpand
Optical and Infrared Images of Galaxies: What’s to be Learned?
Multiwavelength imaging surveys of galaxies are of great value for investigations of their structure and stellar content. The advent of large format near-IR (NIR) arrays means that such surveys needExpand
New Extragalactic Perspectives in the New South Africa
What is the nature and composition of the dust grains responsible for the visual extinction in our Galaxy and in other galaxies beyond? What are the ranges in temperature of dust grains? Can these beExpand
