Abstract Certain striking similarities exist between formal economic anthropology and human sociobiology. These similarities include a focus on the individual, the assumptions of maximization and scarcity, emphasis on human flexibility, and a discontent with functionalism. These two approaches can be seen as complementary, not in opposition to each other.
