This discussion of Katie Gentile's paper (this issue) raises questions about the underlying unconscious dynamics at work in the cultural icon of the supermodel mom. The “supermodel mom” offers a kind of seamless, bloodless, stretch-mark-less version of pregnancy and childbirth. In so doing, it provides us with a fantasied escape from those worrying dimensions of the female body in childbirth.
