Background: Many papers are published on the topic of software metrics but it is difficult to assess the current status of metrics research. Aim: This paper aims to identify trends in influential software metrics papers and assess the possibility of using secondary studies to integrate research results. Method: Search facilities in the SCOPUS tool were used to identify the most cited papers in the years 2000–2005 inclusive. Less cited papers were also selected from 2005.
