Thin polymeric films are increasingly being utilized in diverse technological applications, and it is crucial to have a reliable method to characterize the stability of these films against dewetting. The parameter space that influences the dewetting of thin polymer films is wide (molecular mass, temperature, film thickness, substrate interaction) and a combinatorial method of investigation is suitable. We thus construct a combinatorial library of observations for polystyrene (PS) films cast on…

Hydrophobic switching nature of methylcellulose ultra-thin films: thickness and annealing effects.
TLDR
This study is the first to examine the thermal annealing affects on the thermal response function of a thermoresponsive polymer and is important for researching how to tailor the hydrophobic switching property of MC thin films for future sensing applications.
Pattern-directed to isotropic dewetting transition in polymer films on micropatterned surfaces with differential surface energy contrast.
TLDR
This study indicates a transition from pattern-directed to isotropic PS dewetting at critical Δ values, and provides a powerful approach for investigating the large number of parameters that govern the stability of ultrathin polymer films, and the physical factors that influence the dewetted film morphology.
Observation of a characteristic length scale in the healing of glassy polymer interfaces
We examine the evolution (‘healing’) of the interface between two polymer films at various temperatures below the glass transition temperature, Tg. Specifically, neutron reflectometry is used to
Surface morphology diagram for cylinder-forming block copolymer thin films.
TLDR
The BCP film surface morphology depends on the method of film formation so that nonequilibrium effects are evidently operative, and this effect has significant implications for controlling film structure in nanomanufacturing applications based on BCP templates.
Generation of monolayer gradients in surface energy and surface chemistry for block copolymer thin film studies.
TLDR
Examination of the copolymer thin film surface morphology with optical and atomic force microscopy revealed the expected morphological transitions across the gradient, and the gradient profile is independent of time as long as maximum coverage of the substrate is achieved.
Enhancing the stability of polystyrene ultrathin films by using star-shape polymers as dewetting inhibitors
This contribution introduces a new class of materials for improving the stability of polystyrene (PS) ultrathin films. Two types of three-arm polystyrenes (TA-PS) with different arm lengths are added
Stability of Polymer Grafted Nanoparticle Monolayers: Impact of Architecture and Polymer–Substrate Interactions on Dewetting
The stability of polymer thin films is crucial to a broad range of technologies, including sensors, energy storage, filtration, and lithography. Recently, the demonstration of rapid deposition on
