Although cardiac catheterization-related infections are rare, caps and masks are often worn to minimize this complication. However, documentation of the value of caps and masks for this purpose is lacking. We, therefore, prospectively evaluated the experience of 504 patients undergoing percutaneous left heart catheterization, seeking evidence of a relationship between whether caps and/or masks were worn by the operators and the incidence of infection. No infections were found in any patient…
Infection control guidelines for the cardiac catheterization laboratory: Society guidelines revisited
The following revision of the original 1992 guidelines is written specifically to address the increased utilization of the catheterization laboratory as an interventional suite with device implantation.
Do Anaesthetists Need to Wear Surgical Masks in the Operating Theatre? A Literature Review with Evidence-Based Recommendations
This review was undertaken to collate current evidence and make recommendations based on this evidence about the role of the surgical mask in modern surgical and anaesthetic practice.
Wearing of masks for obstetric regional anaesthesia
A postal survey of 801 members of the Obstetric Anaesthetists Association was carried out in the United Kingdom and Ireland to investigate the use of surgical facemasks whilst performing spinal and epidural blocks, finding that half of those who routinely wore masks did not believe that wearing a mask reduced the risk of infection.

What is the appropriate "dress code" for the cardiac catheterization laboratory?
The data suggest that the risk of infection from cardiac catheterization is more closely correlated with the volume of studies done in the laboratory than in the manner of dress of the laboratory personnel and visitors in the laboratories, which will help decrease the infection rate in cutdowns.
The Complications of Coronary Arteriography
The incidence of major complications-including death, myocardial infarction, and cerebral embolism-was higher in examinations using the femoral approach than the brachial approach, and the incidence of arterial thrombosis and contrast agent reactions was higher for the brACHial approach.
Bacterial endocarditis after cardiac catheterization.
The history of a patient who developed fatal, acute bacterial endocarditis following diagnostic cardiac catheterization is presented and the implications regarding antibiotic prophylaxis andCatheterization technique are discussed.
